Too much oil

Got daf truck back from service today and on the electric oil display the oil is over the max mark i am sure that it is a true reading as the service before the oil leval was topped up to the mark on the dip stick then the electric oil display was calibrated with the daf davey i know this was done as i watched the fitter do this.In the morning i will tilt the cab and check the oil on the dip stick, the question is will any damage be done to engine or will the excess oil be burnt of or find its way out of the breather.I do not really wont to take the truck back as i know the bloke who done the job and he his a top class fitter who has helped me out noend in the past

ignore it and crack on :astonished: mines a 62 plate xf and its always wrong just check it with the dipstick think u may find its spot on

To do any damage it has to be way overfilled. Most tractor unit engines take between 35 to 40 litres of oil so another 3 or 4 litres wont cause any foaming which is the only way too much oil can cause any damage.

This. All modern trucks seem to post endless messages on the dashboard saying that there’s something wrong when there isn’t. Mine spends the first hour of every day telling me that I have “reduced gearbox function” and even after 18 months I’ve never noticed the gearbox function being reduced in any way, shape or form.

I once filled up my car with too much oil    , it smoked for a fair while when the new oil was burnt off  I wasn’t too bothered though as she was on her last legs anyway.

I understand it can pop seals due true excess pressure in spite of the breather pipes. Also as there is an excess amount of oil in the sump, the spinning crank causes a great deal of turbulence in the oil, foaming it up. The foaming oil no longer lubricates well causing damage.

I used to assume the crank and bearings splashed in the sump oil, apparently not.

Remember the Ford electric dipstick on the XR3 and similar vintage Escorts?

A garage where I worked had one come in…the owner complained about oil consumption, smoke and a horrible engine noise.

The dipstick was faulty. We drained a couple of buckets of oil out of it!

The horrible noise from the engine was the crankshaft big-ends slapping down into the oil!
