I think they should film some more and post them up
( police preferably ) , it’s sobering , makes you think twice , shocks me to be honest , that bmw / last truck , frightening
I’ve no idea what happened but I left a lot more braking room this morning than I normally do and I’m far from a tailgater
nb I saw that video of that car pulling out on that motorbike on speed awareness course , even though I’d seen it before it still made me think bloody
hell , and look harder than I would normally do
it’s not nice to see this kind of accident , but sometimes that’s what we need to make us steady down a touch
thoughts with anyone involved
Accoding to news articles, 2 dead, the drivers of the BMW and the last lorry. Happened on Monday evening 6th Feb heading in to Antwerp from north.
Those two DAFs at least should be fitted with emergency brake, they were the least damaged too, could the emergency brake have made the accident behind them that much worse? I’ve had it go off in anger (and it saved me from an accident) and quite frankly anyone following too close behind me wouldn’t have stood a chance it was that effective. The sooner it’s on a majority of vehicles the better I say

Gotta ask Luke, or anyone else, if you know that is. I’ve driven wagons with this, in my opinion, hideous system, I normally deactivate it. Do the break lights come on when it activates and sharply slows you down, so as to warn those following behind?

Yes and on some trucks hazards. I get your point but I see deactivating it as a dangerous option. There will come a time when there’s a serious smash involving a driver who switched it off and it will be interesting to see how the courts handle it

Fair comment. Imagine you’ve just made an overtake. You’re flashed in. After pulling in, the AEBS “sees” a nonexistent hazard and chucks on the anchors?
Even if there’s no collision, what’s the following driver’s opinion of you gonna be?
AEBS is a good idea, when it works PROPERLY I’ll welcome it.
Call me a dinosaur if you like, but, it ain’t good enough yet. (Especially since the book says it may not recognise pedestrians, cyclists, but clearly does recognise ghosts)

It always warns you first and in the scenario you mention it’s very unlikely to see a non existent on a motorway. I’ve found it works well in most cases
its going to be great when the skinnys at calais and the like know how it works.the poor wee souls wont need to cut down trees or possibly hurt their backs dragging concrete blocks onto the motorway.

I’ve only experience of one, and it rears up occasionally at motorway over bridges as well as roadside furniture. I defected it from new, but the dealers say it’s ok, and it seems to be the same as others we have.
Sometimes weeks with nowt, then 3 times in a morning! I’m less than impressed.

Agree on your last bit about “ghosts” !! Was on an Autoroute one night, nothing in front, nothing overtaking and the ■■■■ thing went off!! Buzzer scared the ■■■ out of me, well made me jump a bit, well actually made me really jump and the anchors went on ! WTF?
One of the reasons I turn it off, piece of crap equipment! The system as you say "not quite good enough , yet "

Saw 6 wagons on the A9 today all nose to tail…WHY■■? The road was almost empty!Dieseldog, Adonis and their mates foot down flat out trying to make it to the boat.
Flat out doesnt mean nose to tail, it’ll be quite the opposite. Dont tell me…you believe in this ‘speed kills’ bollox…

was told it was only allowed to be turned off when vehicle is being towed/recovered? Anyone know? Anyone care?

There’s a switch on the dash…
If it was illegal to turn it off…
There wouldn’t be.
Company rules may apply.
Read small print for terms and conditions.

What has the world come to when people feel the need to get out their phone and video these things and then post them to social media…
Didn’t the guy filming say that his car was the one on the hard shoulder at the start of the vid?
I don’t think you’d be so quick to film something like this, if you were actually one of those impacted.
The way the outside people are behaving, looks like a mixture of shock and curiosity. It’s almost as if they’re trying to look inside to see the crushed bodies that might well be in both the car and the final french truck.
DCPC Module 9… Suddenly seems like “Required Study” now, don’t it?

He said " this is the car …and this is the one that drove ahead…"
Dutch drivers refer to their truck as their car (dat is mijn auto…). So I presume he is the driver of the blue daf.
It looks as it is filmed just after it happened and they do not realise the seriousness of the facts yet.
It was a sunny day and according to some newspapers it is possible the low sun might be a reason for the accident.
If you look at the shadows on the ground in the video, it is a possibility.
Whatever reason, it is a very sobering video.

I wasn’t aware of referring to one’s truck as one’s car. I guess it’s the English equivalent of “That’s my Motor” then, which can take either meaning? It looks as it is filmed just after it happened and they do not realise the seriousness of the facts yet.

Sobering video indeed. Was there ever actually any “News Followup” with it in the local press?
