tomtom ona lap top

Sat in traffic today the motor next to me appeared to have tomtom working on his open laptop. It wasn’t the version tomtom home gives but full screen does anyone know how this is possible I’m thinking it must be another operating system to windows or a emulator?
Before anyone start about open laptops I don’t want to do it I’m just curious.

You can run the pocket pc version of tomtom on a pocket pc emulator.

Any idea where you can get the emulator, as this is something i’ve been trying to do also.

There’s also Microsoft Mappoint/Autoroute and Mapfactor PC Navigator that both run directly under Windows, it’s a bit less faffing than running an emulator.

PC Navigator looks a lot like a dedicated sat-nav with touchscreen support and there’s a truck version - according to the website it avoids low bridges, weight limits and minor/smaller roads. I didn’t notice any real difference but then I didn’t use it for long. I prefer Mappoint, it’s designed to be used with a mouse, so you don’t have to go through countless menus to get it to do anything - most things can be done with a couple of clicks.

You’d also need a GPS dongle - I can recommend the GlobalSat BU353, it’s cheap and I’ve never had any problems with mine.

Not that I have my laptop on when I’m driving of course
