TomTom live traffic

Well having succumbed to the dreaded sat nav after years of saying “don’t need it” I got to quite liking them although never 100% trusting them , well a year or so ago the good lady wife treated me to a new one with live traffic after a year using it the subscription ran out , well f#@k me if it wasn’t like loosing an arm, the sat nav still work fine as it always did but not “seeing” any hold ups or delays has cost me at least two hours this week alone , it ■■■■■■ me off so much I’ve had to buy a new subscription for another year , is it just me does any one else use it or is it just me?

Still on my first year. It’s useful but I’m always very skeptical about following it’s diversion around it so I usually just plough on through it unless it’s over 5-10 min.

Its diverted me away from long tailbacks and motorway closures many times particularly on foot down frantic fridays, before the radio traffic announcements. A very useful tool i shall continue my subscription , when it expires.

Yeah I agree but if the delay gets bigger as I watch it then I usually divert around it when I can

I don’t have a tomtom with live traffic, but I do have an android phone with google map’s which has a similar form, it often tell’s me there is a small delay on the way home of about 2 minutes, and it’s correct, I found it use’s mobile phone movements to see where the delay’s are, and it’s spot on most of the time.

Was a time the old CB would do the trick.

Never thought of sub to TomTom Live. Might try it to see.

My wife also treated me to a tom tom live and I di say nah wont bother paying as originally it came with a years subscription, but I also succumbed. .wouldn’t be without it now

Knowledge is power!

I would never let it divert me off its own back, I prefer to see the big picture then make an informed decision. Hence I check the traffic on google maps & traffic master, the traffic on my snooper sat nav is rubbish anyway.

You’ve just answered another question as I wondered what other traffic services were like on other brands , I take it the snoopers not much good then? I’ve a mate who’s garmin doesn’t sound like its always on the ball either, I had thought about Google maps on my phone but thought always messing about with the phone whilst driving would attract unwanted attention!

It’s rubbish, it gives notifications when it feels like it, (my aerial may be set up wrong) then you have to press a button & decide wether to route round it, sometimes there’s a whole list to trawl through, a fair few spurious, whilst your driving (cheers). The touch screen is also poor quality.

I prefer a birds eye view of the general picture.

If I was buying another I would get a cheapo as talked about on here in another thread or get a Tom Tom.

Use WAZE app

i got one of theses i always found them to be pretty good you just have to remember you are in a truck and not a car when the sat nav is trying to make you go short cuts brilliant in europe to door every time

Have a read of the link below, depending on which Tom Tom you have you may be able to use an RDS antenna which will give you back the traffic updates
I simply removed the phone sim from the bottom of my 750 when the live services ran out ( this stops it constantly trying to connect ) and have used the RDS evers since

Mine is up next month and I won’t be renewing it. It’s helped a few times but is annoying more often than not, too much false information.

still worth a try

no point paying subscription
just use the rds- tmc
its just another charger but also gives you traffic info
FREE OF CHARGE
tells you if there is accident on your route
how long the delay is
tells you about lane and motorway closures
so you can then follow their diversion to avoid delays
or use your brains and use your own
if you are the full shilling you dont need a sat nav to show you the way
but the rds tmc charger with traffic info
will save you many an hour sitting in traffic jams
each and every week you drive
its a one off payment , £15 on e bay

I have the charger gizmo which doesn’t need a subscription but I don’t trust it, especially at night. It very often reports a road closure when there isn’t one and even worst doesn’t when there is. Delays it posts can be wildly erratic, last Friday whilst sat between Michael Wood and J14 it was telling me there was a 5 minute delay which took 90 minutes to get through.

I now tend to look for confirmation from the overhead matrix but that’s easily another multipage thread why you can’t trust those either.

Use WAZE app

That is good & very accurate but you have to have it running on your phone all the time so your phone needs to be on a mount & charging & it uses data, probably only a small amount but it’s fairly constant.

Google maps pulls traffic data off the waze app, I prefer to dip in to that from time to time to check my route is clear.
