TomTom drive

Recently passed my class 2 but not looking for work till after May. I have been getting prepared to start by buying things I may need for life on the road, one of these things being a tomtom go professional 6200. While I have been playing with the drive app on my android phone I have noticed that truck settings can be inserted into the app for route planning. Have I wasted my money on the 6200. As this app isn’t dedicated to the 6200 could it send truck safe routes to a cheaper tomtom.

Cheers

Yes. :grimacing: Another new poster…

Some of them.

But you havn’t wasted your money. You have paid more for things like a bigger screen and wifi updates.

I’ve for a 6200. In fact I have two due to a ■■■■ up by Amazon. I need to get around to selling one. And I think it’s an ace bit of kit - you won’t regret the purchase once you start using it in the real world. Compared to snooper the routing is spot on.

The issue is that once you have sent the route to your TomTom device, all replanning is handled by the device. So straight away it will likely tell you that there is a quicker/shorter route (even though it is not suitable for your truck), and if the traffic situation changes or you take even a short diversion (e.g. because you miss a turning or you come across a temporary road closure) the SatNav will come up with a car route. Sending the route to a car device doesn’t send the dimension/weight info you have input.

Thanks for the replies, never thought of the rerouting, could get messy. Happy with my purchase again

Going one stage further from my original reply, I think that sending a route to your TomTom device only sends start point, destination and any waypoints you may have specified on the way - it leaves actually navigating from A to B entirely down to the satnav.

Think that it is possible to send the route, in my drive you can still choose between 3 routes but as you say once the sat nav gets it it would probably reroute.

Just put it directly into the tom tom .it will never send you on a car route if you set it up as truck.
Mydrive app has settings for truck height width etc .Is a free tom tom app that you need to link to your device …

And no cheaper tomtom has truck settings unless you buy and old knacker and wack a memory card in it with trucks added .You do not get up to date maps or traffic /Speed cams etc .
Stick with what you have .

You have to pay attention. The satnav might choose a different route to the one you chose on your phone.

If you set waypoints to ensure you get routed a specific way, set them so that they work properly- this also helps you to know your route and what you’re expecting to do.

Setting multiple waypoints to define your route rather defeats the object of having a satnav with live traffic updates…

Maybe you’re following a movement order, or just want to go a certain way like over the M62 instead of the satnav choice of Woodhead etc etc.

I always check the route it suggests and if I want something different I’ll use a waypoint or two to get it. Even with waypoints set, it will still ping and suggest a reroute around heavy traffic, but I’ve never had it set to do it automatically.

I agree with slowlane, only the other night coming down the M5 the gantry signs were telling me that the M50 was closed from the start (J8 M5) to J2, yet the Satnav had originally tried to get me to come off at J7 of the M5 and come down the A38 to rejoin the M50 at J1
As it happens I’d already ignored that ‘advice’ before even knowing that J1 of the M50 was also part of the closed section and I’d set the old Severn Bridge (M48) as my waypoint (Second Severn Crossing was closed too) as it was less hassle and I was in no particular rush or mileage saving exercise.

No Gav ,The my drive app is only compatible with Tomtom Go models but truck routes are only on the 520/620 and 6200/6250 models
you have to select the model when setting it up and scanning the barcode.
Any of those 4 sat navs are the best on the market for truckers and worth every penny
they read your texts and whats app messages out loud , no need to touch the device
in fact you can change your destination mid route if you need to , without touching the device ,you just talk to it
they use the internet when searching for destinations such as company names , i use the voice option for routing in the cab ,
It works out a truck route for you in seconds
