TomTom 520......

Anybody got one or used one, thinking of spending some of the pennys santa gave me!!

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Looking at the 520 not the 520T or 520 Music.

Cheers,bullitt.

I’ve got the 720 which is basically a 520 but with full european mapping I think.

It is very easy to operate and set up and has been well thought out.

I have the 520 and think its great.

takes about 10 to 20 seconds to boot up
very quick to lock onto location once booted ( less than 10 seconds )
screen is very bright and clear.
the directions are accurate and timely and give you plenty of advance notice.
route planning / calculation takes seconds and if you divert, it’ll sort out a new route in seconds too.
the car adapter is 12/24V auto sensing.
the screen mount sucker is reliable and quick … just push it against the window , job done.
the menus are dead easy to work and its very quick at suggestions when your plugging in new details. I also like how it remembers some of your last entries and gives them to you.

the bluetooth phone link is easy to sort out, but the speaker isn’t all that great … it works, but it aint a good quality when in use.

it does work out of the box, but do take the time to install the PC software and update it all. the software that came on the CD needs a big download to update it ( but the actual map data only needed a small update )

the map-share thing is nifty. Whilst i’ve not come across anywhere where i have encountered other peoples data, its extremely handy to be able to correct points on the map where you know the TomTom data is incorrect. In Glasgow i know of one street which is blocked ( has been for years ) , but tomtom shows it as open and tries to navigate you along it. A quick change in the mapshare section and now tomtom navigates around the blocked road as it should.

one thing i wish i could change would be to make the itinerary section closer to the front of the menu screens. its tucked on the 3rd page when for me, its a commonly used feature for multidroping where you can plug in all the drops and shuffle them to find the best route. its a pain to have to delve a few pages to get to it ( but its only a minor issue )

lastly, have a look in the newbies section. there are links to where you can download the bridge height data and setup tomtom to warn you of the low bridges.

the only other thing i can think of is that you should use a satnav with some savvy. it can take you along some obscure routes and sometimes you need to say " no - i’m going this way " rather than relying on it with blind faith. but for the most part, it gets you there.

overall, i like it. its saved my bacon a couple of times finding places.

Thanks for the replies lads…fisha, has your one got the voice recognition system for routing and address`s? Watched the demonstration on the TomTom website and it looks very good, maybe TO good!!!

Also, does it have the fixed speed camera locations installed as standard or is that an extra to pay for or subscribe to?

Have heard that the blue tooth system is not all its cracked up to be,can you link your blue tooth earpiece to it as like a mobile or is just to link your mobile phone to the satnav unit?

Cheers once again for taking the time to reply,

bullitt.

Just connect your phone to the sat nav and use it as a hands free, it is good enough to hold a conversation with.

Regarding speed cams, even if it comes with speed cam database it is worth updating it every 3 months or so I don’t think it is that expensive about Ā£5 I think.

The 720 is the same as the 520 but with more memory & eu maps

Heres a little secret link b4 you buy

http://www.find-satnav-deals.com/eu/

Check out the deals on all the different versions

i chose the 720 without the traffic edition, only cos it was out of stock & well in a lorry you cant exactly take a back road to miss a bit of traffic plus im paid hourly…

rob - why did you have to put that link up after i have bought ! :unamused:

bullit:

mine came with the camera database and it’ll beep you as you approach them. so far its not missed any as yet, but realistically in an HGV, your normally under the trigger speed unless its a 30, or 40 on motorway road works.

as for the voice recognition … i’m scottish. if southern shandy drinkers cannae unnerston me, then theres wan chance tamtam will … nae chance like.

( actually, i haven’t tried it !  )

    Cheers for that fisha, I will see how it gets on with my ā€œSARF Lunndunā€ accent!!

One last question, if I wanted to take it across to europe can I buy / upgrade the maps for western Europe? Would that be a down load straight into the satnav unit or do I buy them on an SD card and insert as required!!!

Cheers once again, Bullitt.

The 720 has all Europe maps installed ready to go.

Hi toby, i understand that if I buy the 720 then europe is already loaded but I rarely if at all go to europe so if i go for 520 which is less expensive and then decide try it on a day trip or driving holiday for example, do I download the EU maps or buy them on an SD card?

to be honest the 720 is down to £199 from £280 now, £175 online home delivery even, but yes i think u can d/load maps for a fee from TomTom website, take a look on the homesite.

Hi all, finally got a TT 520 Music, and I think its great, seems idiot proof!!! But now for probably the most commonly asked question on this forum…POI.

I would like to upload some supermarket fuel stations, not every supermarket chain, just Tescos, Sainsburys and Morrisons but havent got a clue where to start or how to do it.

Have searched around for a few websites but have had no luck, just wondered if anyone here can help with any advice on sites to download from and how to do it!!

Many thanks in advance if you can, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bullitt.

Have a read through this forum.

Just bought a TomTom 920, really fancied a Viamichelin980, but as they are dropping out of the market had to join the flock and go tomtom.
Ā£247inc p&p and ins off an ebay shop

I’ve got a tomtom 520, had it for a while now. I found that the SD card soon filled up so copied everything onto a 1gb card to accomodate all my stuff like truckstops. truck laybys, bridge heights and other useful stuff. This is a brilliant machine and well worth the money, but I still carry a truckers atlas just to be sure
