Garmin sat-navs are [zb]. Tomtom not perfect but certainly better than garmin.
Bit of a daft statement to make, have you ever used or owned a Garmin DZl by any chance? I review and use lots of sat navs and Garmin wins most hands down, expensive for a reason.
Yes and it was [zb]. I hated it even before the gps failed on me.
Crap
Personal preference, unfortunate you had one that went wrong, lots of choice with sat navs and how you use them determines which woks best for you. Your happy with tomtom others aren’t, I am happy with Garmin and others aren’t etc etc.
It was not unfortunate it went wrong because as I said I hated it before it went kaput.
It enabled me to get a full refund off amazon after nearly 2 years and went and got myself a superior tomtom.
I’ve no doubt the quality of mapping info and hardware on the Garmin is great but I just can’t get over the fact that its mapping design is hideous. It looks like something Microsoft churned out in the late nineties. I find TomTom and Google Maps far more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Garmin takes some beating in the build and quality stakes, I agree that the map aesthetics are not that great. Takes a bit of getting used to after using a tomtom, similar to windows and apple, you soon get used to them but they are different.
I have a little Start 20 with lifetime maps in truck but mostly for the speed camera warnings it provides, serial begins AP…if the start 20’s with serial AO are no longer going to be updated, will my AP be ok, or is it from AO onwards ?
I’m relying more and more on google maps by phone and a bridge height atlas for my truck needs.
Been a TT user since the very early days, and like their platform, but if they are going to stop updates, it’s a kick in the crutch for the consumer.
However. The basic map is the same across the range, so using a hackers site to get a latest map, might be the way to go, (Not that I have ever used them… ) but it seems like they are not interfering with the truck section which is theoretically an add on to the map, so if your adept at sat navs, then look around if you have one of these models.
One also has to remember that there are more truck programmes now for smart phones on Google Play that you can use without smashing your data allowance, (Or ones you can use offline for free.) so as long as you can add on cameras like Pocket GPS World, then all should be good. Friend at work uses a small tablet with maps from Google Play, so seeing the screen isn’t an issue.
If you need to update your sat nav with a cable and computer its time to bin it
It is out of date and so is everything on it , you need a new one
New ones update over wi fi

How are you finding the garmin’s ‘traffic’ mr tramp?
Had no problems yet, but I do think tomtom is definitely the winner when it comes to traffic.
Been using TomTom with traffic since Christmas, and it’s spot on, even when heading towards a delay that’s being cleared, watching the delay time disappearing, or getting to a que,and within minutes it’s correct with the delay, allows you decide weather to go round or stick with it.

I will concede the traffic feature on the tomtom is excellent, however, whilst I’ve got lifetime map updates I haven’t got lifetime traffic so it’s expired now. The new truck I’m getting next month all being well has got built in nav so hopefully, if it’s any good the tomtom will become redundant.
