I`ve bought one this week for what i think is a good price
£131. Available from dixons duty free shop at the channel tunnel
I can see how people get in some sticky situations using them too! Its tried to take me some wierd and wonderful ways this week including through the middle of small belgian towns. 
Can i set it up to only use major roads? If yes how?
And advice on downloading extra voices would be good too

The best thing I have found is just ignore it and go the way you think is right.
I used it to go down the Central region in France and I went Rouen. it was trying to make me go to Paris all the time, even when I got to Chartres it wanted me to go back to Paris and then down the A6. They are brilliant for the last few kilometres, but use your noddle, especially with bridges and tunnels.
