Tom Tom Go

el gordo 78:
set it for somewhere proper awkward and obscure and marvel at its ability to get you there, albeit ignoring low bridges etc.

TBH I’d have spent the extra £30 and got a PDA based system for the extra flexibility and functions it affords.

Done this morning Gordo. Rutland Centre, Charles Street, Leicester. Got me straight their and even avoided the wrong end of the one way street I usually end up wondering how to get round :sunglasses: . I’m well pleased with it, also I just took it out the box, switched it on and it went I didn’t have to get any hardware to work with software if you know what I mean  . I also gave it some proper obscure addresses in the Loughborough/Leicester area I used to multidrop to and had trouble with. Straight to 'em no probs. I look forward to getting in the truck tomorrow  .

Hope there as good as they say they are just went and bought myself one today roll on monday.

the gos are have become a real hit it seems but you cant get traffic data on them unlke the pda based systems

Certainly useful, I used mine for the first time this weekend, apart from it sending me through a very tight country lane for one drop it worked fine.

Also if you havent already done so you can load speed camera info to your POI’s using these threads, not that i ever speed…but very handy!

I shouldn’t worry Neil!

Whats this travel machine that is advertised in commercial motor along with DD’s Hour Guard?

it’s a very basic and slow routefinder - I bought one to give me a rough idea of milages when I have to give an instant quote to a farmer who has just bought some cattle/sheep at a market ( they usually forget how far it is back to their farm!!)

I think I would have been better with a PDA !

SCAN computers @ Bolton have TomTom GO on their Today Only page for Monday 26th Oct

£418.30 inc pp

sods law post a price and find a better one straight after

£412

actually the pda system is cheeper than the go and can be had for around £350 if you know where to look

I bought a bundled package of HP h1940 PDA, Tom Tom Go, Cab Mount and 256mb data card from the airside Dixons at Birmingham Airport for £399 on my way to Portugal last week. We had great fun playing the games on the PDA whilst on holiday and it has got MS Word and Excel built in. I’ve got all the Tom Tom software loaded and it just needs to be set up in the van. Thats a job for this weekend unless I get a spare hour on the road (fat chance…)

Looking at the software though it looks a great bit of kit.

Calv

discovered tomtom3 is missing a huge chunk of the silverstone bypass between whitfield and some point toward the M1 (only noticed when I glanced at the display near whitfield and I was re-joining a road from a field by the displays reckoning, hehe).

still, it got me to condover industrial estate in the sticks near shrewsbury with no problems.

t&d november has letter extoling the virtues of sat nav. it should have been the star letter. bet the driver needs a tenner

It made the difference tonight between them sending a taxi to come and get me and me getting home. Got me to Bridge Road, London with no wrong turns. I’ll do a review when I’ve finished for the week, but a top bit of kit  .

If you’re in the market for a new mobile phone contract get the Orange SPV m1000 (from free on some websites!).

Then get the TomTom software for about £100 and a GPS receiver for about £40 both off ebay and there you have a sat-nav system, and a very useful phone/pda.

I’ve been using this combination for a few weeks now and it is superb. You can even make/receive a phone call while the phone is navigating.

checkpoint.oabsoftware.nl/ - speed/red light camera overlays for tomtom.

A new service I have on trial atm, which will work on any GRPS phone is the RAC traffic-i congestion system that uses the Trafficmaster data and gives you a zoomable map with all the traffic hold ups. I downloaded what it says is a 7 day trial and loaded it onto the SPV M1000 and it is superb!

It also says on the phone that I have 28 days trial left…

However at just £39.99 a year or £4 a month I think this is a service I will be subscribing to. Bear in mind though that your phone operator will also charge for the Data download through GRPS.

NOTE - I have no connection to any of the companies/services listed above, just a very grateful user that thinks technology is just great

Fish.

Ooops, forgot the traffic-i URL:

The problem I found with the mobile navigation (wayfinder with a Nokia 7610i) is that you need network coverage (IE Gprs connection) so’s it’ll navigate. Uno problemo (although you might tell me different :open_mouth:  .

Nah, using the SPV & navigator doesn’t involve using the phone bit. So the Sat-Nav will work regardless of coverage as it’s taking the positining from the GPS receiver.

The only bit of this that needs the mobile coverage is the i-traffic system.
