As a child i remember going to france spain italy etc in the camper van for our holliday. whilst we would avoid the motorways taking the senic route i remember haveing to play what we called toilet roulet ie having to try and find an “english toilet” rather than the european alternative especialy for my sister. However they were always clean and tidy in the majority of cases. I havent had to use the facilities in france for years as i have only ever been on day trips in the last 25 years so have no idea what the rural places are like now however the reports for truck stops are always good.
This country seems to have the apropriate facilitys in the truck stops such as they are however they arnt used (couldnt count the amount of times i have seen people peeing in a bush at clacket lane when the toilets are 30 seconds away)in the last month. The toilets themselves seem ok if you ignore the ignorent gits that dont flush them. As to rdc’s / workplace toilets thats a joke. i have obviously only ever been in the mens but there is usualy feaces smeared on the walls and or left on the floor. The last place i worked at spent 2 weeks renovating the toilets (and canteen) with in a week both the toilet seats in the mens had been stolen and all the sink plugs and the shower tray had been broken. I fail to see what the problem is why in this country people cant look after them and who is responcable for the damage
You wait until you get to my age 60 with prostrate / diabetis issues , when I pull up ive got to go , if I did the 30 seconds ( more like 3/4 mins ) to the toilets id have soaked y fronts & wet boots
Years ago we had respect & compassion for the older people , try it !!! ■■■■■■■ kids

quote ; ‘‘USUALLY faeces smeared on the walls, and/or left on the floor’’?
Usually??
You must frequent some dodgy places mate, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this at rdc s or company bogs.
I’ve certainly had it used as an urban myth as an excuse for them not letting me use their bogs,.as in ‘‘The last driver smeared etc etc’’ which is usually complete ■■■■■■■■,
If it was true on every occasion, I’ve followed this phantom ■■■■ ter around for the last 30+ years, because that chestnut has been fed to me numerous ■■■■ times.
A lot of these places stop drivers using them,.with the ‘because of mess left’ excuse, because they are too tight arsed to employ cleaners.
If everyone used the same criteria there would be no public bogs anywhere unless people carried a mop and bucket around with them.
I have seen vandalism now and again , sure, but not too often, but that is down to the anti social pond life amongst us.

Makes sense.
There is the “broken windows” idea: In a run down area with graffiti and broken windows, no-one will think twice about chucking one more bit of rubbish down. In a clean tidy area no-one (almost) will be the first to chuck rubbish around.
Look after somewhere and it gets easier to keep clean.
Are you referring to the holes in the ground toilets that are in France , where you stand either side of a foul smelling hole and hope and pray there is no splash back , these are normally on main roads but not in the motorway service areas ?
Sky Captain:

It’s not so much the holes in the ground that’s the problem with public toilets, it’s the holes in the side of the cubicles you have to beware of…some ■■■■■■■ could have your eye out while you’re sat there taking a crap.

You`ve not been there for a few years?
Precious few of them left now.
Some have stainless steel doors, electronic locks, radio playing, bowl and floor rinsed out automatically when you leave the cubicle, cleaned regularly. Others more tiled brick etc, but with big cubicules, steel doors, hard work for vandals to damage.
Nowhere is good if a mucky beggar gets in before you, but hey-ho.
I went to a depot who had installed a new shower block in a tidy Portakabin , but some bright spark decided to ram his pants down the toilet so hard that a plumber had to come out so they banned all visiting drivers from using their facilities .
But it’s good France is diminishing in their split axle toilets but were handy if you had a spate of food poisoning from over indulgence of the fruits de mer .

My daughter suggested this ( I did blush at my daughter suggesting it ) , though she is a nurse so not much bothers her
My urology consultant said last time there is medication I could take , but as I was diagnosed with prostrate / diabetis at the same time there still not sure what is causing my problems
But of late I’ve been a lot better , so we’re erring on the side of diabetis , as tried really hard to get on top of it of late , we shall see
I have a question for the elders around this thread. Back in the day, before Britain, especially England was ■■■■■■■ to the rest of europe, was this problem of facilities in Britain that bad? I wonder because it seems the culture in Britain has declined completely regarding the sense of ownership of your own country. I see trash scattered everywhere on motorways, the farming fields flanking the M1 and M40 are like a scene of some paper wrap and plastic bag apocalyptic movie sometimes. Also, some junctions coming off a major motorway are spilling over with, what looks like, ■■■■ bottles and other less abhorrent trash. Not to mention the endless fly tipping piles I have seen when driving around using B roads. Was it always like that? I have been to Scotland a few times, also Wales and I did live in Ireland for a bit and in none of those I saw such behaviour…
It looks to me as it is more of a cultural problem than an infrastructure one.

I started running to Europe in 1974 and it was an eye-opener as to how much more advanced European facilities were in comparison to Britain, even Turkey - a poor country at the time with many roads not even tarmaced - had been supplied with fresh water on stream in some of their laybys since around 1532 - one of many achievements of Mustapha Pasha, as the Ottomans conquered much of Europe.
And to give the Turks credit you could find a freshly cooked hot meal almost everywhere 24/7 on the main routes.
I did think that when we became closer to Mainland Europe English habits would improve, but they appear to have got even worse.
You notice it in Cornwall in the Summer when the English come on Holiday, how much rubbish they leave everywhere.
However when you have a role model like Alexander Boris du Pfeffel Johnson (now celebrating the birth of his 10th/11th/20th child) and who can’t even comb his hair or even remember the parties in his own home, you can’t really blame them.
What whisperingsmith said plus 1.
However it seems that in the UK and on the near continent our eastern european colleagues are matching us in addition to helping with the closure of some facilities through taking up parking places but spending no money.
