To printout or not to printout..that is the question

Silver_Surfer:
As an operator, if drivers keep using the printer paper as they have a printing fetish and then theres none left when you are stopped and asked for a printout although they should have a means of reading directly off the card then that’s a pain in the bum.

It’s also a £60 fixed penalty for not having the printing paper

the siemans one. yeah ive driven loads of them that do this. you just press the eject button to get your card out and without being asked if I wanted a printout. the message on the screen appears printout strarted… the lorry I drove yesterday did this thats what made me ask

upon finishing it usually asks end country then it asks 24hour day,i select no and my card ejects without the printout.

TBH I only check there is paper in the tacho not to see if there is a spare roll stashed anywhere. I’ve got one of those in my bag  I only do printouts if I need to, certainly not daily.

I’m agency. I do print outs daily. Any muck ups, queries i have printed proof. I’ll plant a tree if your that worried. Would rather have my own proof of what i have been up to in the day thank you.

That would be the same proof that is on your card and will be for months and could be printed out any time should a query arise? Bit pointless taking a daily printout when all the info is on the card and easily accessible.

When I leave my vehicle at the depot and it will be used by an agency driver I remove the roll from the VU and lock it and the spares in the overhead locker. If I don’t the rolls tend to get nicked, I’ve even had the one out of the VU nicked before now so I remove it to save them the trouble.

I can see where the agency driver is coming from in regard to records - how cheap is a download machine so that the agency driver can download the info off the card onto a PC ?

I don’t understand why any agency need the tachograph records. I doubt that any Chardonnay, Amber, or Courtney bint can understand them anyway, analogue or digital.

If the agency send you to a client for 6am then they should be paying you from then maybe with some pre agreed amount for travel. At the end of the week or day, a simple phone call should satisfy, or while you are being debriefed, just fill in a diary page and ask the ops to sign it.

If they are so adamant, ask them to buy you one of these or supply it for a £25 deposit.

£16.95 and all you need is a laptop

Or the cheaper option -

Some models available for less than the cost of one printer roll and lasts longer. If you do need a printout at a later date for a more detailed account of a day because a query has arisen you can take a printout then, a shift will be on the card for at least 6 and more likely 10 - 12 months.

you don’t have to use any thing like that all you do is go to the boss and ask him for a copy of all the record from you card and there have to give to you its in the regs.

Indeed, but if you just need one day it’s easier to just print it out yourself. If you don’t have access to a digi unit when you need it though your option is a good un.

that if there have paper and know how to :stuck_out_tongue:

A bit off topic but if you really want to download the card data to your computer there are cheaper options than the £381.88 glorified Digifob thing.

Well they clearly know how to and they have paper because it seems they are doing a printout every single shift.
