Evening All.
Having just passed my CPC I am currently applying to become my own TM and get rid of my external TM. Now the recommended hours given by Vosa for upto 2 trucks is 8 hours, which I’m sure we’ll agree is excessive for dealing with 6 tachos per week etc. There is the option on the form to state less hours providing you give a full explanation as to how you intend to effectively control the vehicles. I just wondered if anyone had ever gone down this route and what the outcome of your application was?
Also, I am a director of my company and I’m hearing that Vosa will not look kindly on me being director,TM and driver. Surely the roles of TM and Director follow very similar lines and director is basically just a title within a ltd company. Has anyone applied having been in all 3 roles and been successful?
To look through 5-6 tachos per week, 5 defect reports to myself takes me all of 5 minutes! I sub contract to one customer so all I do invoicing wise is fill a book out with load details and that goes to them on a Friday along with all weigh bridge tickets. Simples.

I am the nominated TM on my own 3-vehicle O licence, in the name of my own Limited Company, of which I am the only nominated official.
I did send a covering letter with my application saying that I intended to operate one vehicle at first which I would drive myself, and realised that I would not be able to do continue to do this if I expanded the fleet to the full capacity of the licence ( you need to devote 16 hours a week for a three-vehicle license) but that if this ever happened I would employ three drivers and manage the company full time from home.
I was granted the licence without any further queries.
I am ltd and my own tm and tm for somebody else too,I can’t remember any probs as I explained that we both only had 1 vehicle each which we drove our selves, and did the same work together,so I was just the same as a internal tm.
We changed our O’licence from restricted to full international earlier this year, we operate 3 trucks and have an O’licence for 5, but between them they only cover 50,000 kms per year. Our transport manager, who is and external one, sent an explanation as to why he should only need to put 8 hours a week into the job.
VOSA accepted it and we were granted the upgrade without to many problems, much to my surprise.
When you fill out the TM1 remember VOSA will require you to give details of driving time as well as office time. You can try to get less hours but my experience is you will likely be called to a public inquiry.
Go with the 8 is my advice and don’t rock the boat.
