TIR??

Never knew a Diesel ■■■■,but I did briefly know a Diesel Dan doing Middle East in the early/mid '70’s,used to have his daughter with him all the time.Very sus!Mind you,she was a big girl and could change a truck wheel quicker than most blokes.

Deisel ■■■■, real name ■■■■ Alder from Penge. Good mate of Jimmy Ellis and Bobby Butler. Used to work for a Turk ( Nissan Baba) many years ago, hauling Massey Furgesson tractors to Turkey and Rothmans too.
I used to know him when I was on for Roy Bradford Lawrabian.
He died in about 1990. Proper funeral, all the lads were there.

I took a load of steel for Astran on an ‘open’ TIR Carnet from Motherwell to Doha in 1993. Every page of the Carnet was stamped ‘Bulky or Heavy’. The trailer could not be sealed because the load was oversize. Jan or Bob in Astran’s office told me that upto 7 (If I remember correctly) items can be transported on a trailer travelling under an ‘open’ Carnet. I had no real grief except for at Haditha (Saudi border with Jordan) the Saudi customs insisted that they sealed the ratchet to the chains so that it would show if I loosened the chains before the Qatar border. I blew a tyre after Raffa and put a super single on the second steer. Nick King met me in Doha. I tipped at Mannai Marine at Umm Said. They tipped me with a giant fork lift truck. The glamour is highly over rated. In my opinion if you can survive 4 Netto distribution depots in one week it is equal to a Doha. 2 Morrisons and 3 Netto is equal to an Oman etc…

When we were running out with the fridges the drivers always said TIR stood for Tipping in Rungis
