Tips on not looking like a twit your first day?

ah i have seen zb on so many posts and didnt know what it meant ! the last thing i want to do is offend anyone on here, you guys and girls are like the masters to me, i can only lerarn off yourselves, and would hate to burn my bridges so to speak

gashgash:
so hyperthetically, if i weighed myself, and was overloaded, do you refuse to take it till they take it off ?

and would there be hell on if it meant leaving one pallet, or whatever was left over ?

if you think it is overloaded, GET IT WEIGHED, if there isnt a weighbridge on site go to the nearest public one. you will not get done if you are stopped aslong as you are going to the nearest weighbridge or back to the yard. They probably will moan about it but it is also in their best interests for you NOT to be overloaded, it is cheaper for them to rearrange to deliver that 1 pallet than pay the fine for you beiong overweight, and you do not want to have to pay the fine either.

You won’t offend anyone asking questions and before you know it you will be confident enough and know enough to help people that are in your position now. As for being a master, I don’t think anyone knows it all, this type of job can throw something new at you everyday. Just enjoy it and take as much info in as you can and dont be afraid to ask a question.

cheers selby, hopefully in the next few weeks i can help other people, i will post a diary up of my first few days, the fears i have had, and the things that help me through.

to be honest i cant wait to get out and about, i love driving at heart, whether it be cars, fork lifts, vans, tractors which i have drove for 4 years and now trucks, i want to do this for a bit then do my class c+e !

gashgash:
really sorry, not meaning to offend anyone at all,

can i change the title?

yes, but not the ones in the replies !! no problem though editing the titles in 20 posts is top of my list of fun things to do on a Saturday night :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

these are the rules you agreed to when you signed up

Ah so the mystery word was twit!

Get yourself a truckers atlas with bridge heights and put a tape in your work bag to measure your wagon.
Don’t trust your sat nav blindly,if a road looks iffy then stop and have a close look at the map.
When you hit 4 hours driving start thinking about where you can stop for your 45 as that last half an hour sure can come on you quick when the lay-bys are full.
Make sure you get your PODs signed or stamped. Any problems with shortages or damages then phone your office before you leave to cover yourself.
Don’t forget your flask.
Have fun.

shropsbri, i love your post, its adds a whole new dimension about, routes, heights etc, unfortuneatly, i dont drink tea or coffee (i dont play with farm animals either which is the boat i am classed in for not drinking the stuff)

im making a mental note of all this as im the type of person that, you say it once and it sticks, i crave knowledge,

cheers mate

There is no such thing as a daft question if you genuinely dont know the answer :bulb:

Yes some on these forums may raise an eyebrow or make a smart arsed comment, but the majority will probably give you the answer and some well meaning advice on reading up or training…

My advice is ask away, better to appear to a few on here to be a [zb] sorry twit  and get help from those who know the answer than screw up the thing that pays your mortgage

No probs, glad I could help a little. Would be good to read your diary to see how you get along.

I done me C+E 16 months ago and haven’t looked back, get your C+E done as soon as you can, best thing I ever done. Took me about 4 months to get my foot in the door, but been driving artics full time for a year now and love it, and the works much easier as well

Neither do i

You wont pull the wool over anyones eyes about your experience so be honest and say this is your first day. When you get to your first drop tell the forkie that your new and dont know the crack so you’ll probably have to help me out etc".

You will fine though that theres always someone in the yard that will “take you under their wing” so you dont have to worry.

Language please dear boy if it need star it not allowed & I find this title very offensive

Angela

You must move in a strange part of the transport world if you don’t hear that word 20 times a day, Ange.

No I dont here it very often tbh & if I do would say something ( mainly if I know them ) but a lot of men watch there language when a woman is present have you not noticed this

Has has been said no question is a stupid 1 ( well the 1 you dont ask if you dont know )

But when you arrive see if you can speak to a driver & ask them if in doubt

Hi gashgash!

Welcome onto the forum mate. Congrats on getting your cat C and good luck in your new career.

I second what others have said about trying to go on and upgrade to C+E as that work is generally easier, usually better paid and is a lot more rewarding! Not to mention you will get more opportunities of employment if you have C+E. I recently upgraded my licence after having the cat C for over 7 years, and I really wished I had upgraded straight away tbh. I was very lucky to get a C+E job with a local company within weeks of getting the upgrade but I knew that having it gave me a better chance of getting employed.

Like Harry said, you are always best off asking others drivers who will 99% of the time be more than willing to help out the new guy. You don’t even have to say you are a new driver, just say that you have only just started at this company and wish to get things right first time, so would you mind showing me the best way etc.

All the best with it and don’t forget to keep us all updated with your progress as it’s good for other newcomers who come on here to get inspired. :sunglasses:

ask… ask… ask… i know how you must be feeling as i started not so long ago.

i remember asking one of the lads how to open a curtain. i got my leg ripped off, for about ten minutes but he showed me!

you gotta be thick skinned in this game!

best of luck pal

cheers everyone for all the tips, i certainly will keep you lot informed of what happens with me, and again, cheers, you lot have really made me not worry at all about my first day !
