Where’s your first load on Monday ?
If your going to Greenhow it’s easy
Let me know
Jim
I was at greenhow on thursday. With my trainer. Not sure if ive just forgotten but I actually dont remember going straight onto the weighbridge when we came in. We parked up just past it by the wall and went into the office.she showed me a couple of photos of where to go. Question. Why didn’t we go onto weighbridge 1st? Did she already have my unit weight on record?

Quite possible. I regularly run trailers into Portsmouth ferry terminal for going to the Channel Islands. Most of the time you go straight round, drop the trailer, collect the return & go. If an unregistered,as in never been before, unit goes in you drop the trailer, leave the port then weigh in solo. That gives the shipping weight of the trailer & load.
If memory serves that registered weight is good for about 6 months.
Yeh she did ask my reg number, that’s a big clue lol.
Im virtually brand new to trucking, this time last week I was a chef so still trying to get to grips with even the most basic of procedures.

Really m8. Try not to let things get to you. Shrug your shoulders & put it down to experience.
The man who never made a mistake never made anything.

Ha Haa!! Should’ve known you’d try calling on my culinary expertise. It had crossed my mind to maybe do some videos on quick wholesome meals made in the cab. Once I’m comfortable in my job I’ll give it a go.
I drove a tipper for one whole week so know everything about them, ha ha, I’d never driven one before but filled in for a driver on holiday. No H&S back then so it was pretty straight forward, first couple of days tipped sand at a new housing estate, yea man, i got this.
Third day my last load there the foreman threw me a curve ball, not realizing i wasn’t the professional i purported to be. He said tip 1/3rd there, another 1/3rd over there and the rest over there and walked off. I got to the first spot and tipped some out and was pretty happy so off the the next spot and put the tipper up a bit more but nothing came out. I figured that a bit more tipping and a little reversing then sharpish braking would work. Well it didn’t so i pulled forward then gunned it in reverse and slammed the anchors on and that got it moving.
I walked back to gauge if that was about a 1/3rd but everything had come out, the tipper was empty so i didn’t do what the foreman wanted. I asked the TM if the foreman called to complain but he didn’t and the TM just laughed at my mistake and said like another poster said you got it delivered and didn’t break anything so all’s well. Good luck mate.
I heard a few funny stories at my MPQC course on Friday. Some roll overs included.
Aside from everything so far, I’m still getting to grips with the reversing, there’s another thing. The basic exercise in the test just doesn’t go far enough to train you in that department. And all everyone says is “it’ll come”

It gets even worse when the ganger wants the tarmac tipping; “Half over there, t’other half here and the rest in the barrow” or “can you tip it a couple of inches off of the ground so I can get my shovel under it?” One of the last jobs I did was tipping type 1 roadstone at a job near Lichfield, they were making a road around a field and he asked me to spread it out steadily a few inches deep to save them a lot of shovelling as they had no machine. I had done this many times before so not a problem. Well I put it in gear and with the pto engaged (I know, it isn’t ideal but we all did it!) inched forward so the body raised slowly while I was travelling, (I could judge the rate of discharge through the reversing camera) only I had dieseled the floor up after a sticky load of tarmac and 17 tonnes shot out in a heap before the body was even halfway up! He wasn’t exactly impressed at my lack of skill. It would have been better with a rope across the taildoor and a man either side holding it to regulate the flow like they did years ago to form the apex of a road but I’m guessing nobody does that anymore?

Pete.
I’d imagine H&S get in the way of doing things like that now?

Yeh she was sure as he’ll mean. Don’t think she realised I’m hard of hearing and got really ■■■■■■ when she had to repeat herself a couple of times. I may be blessed with a slightly youthful look but I’m 46, don’t tell her that pml
JFC999:
You’ll grow to love her Jase , what you bin on today ?
Jim
Every time I’ve been in she looks rough as ZB like a mega hang over ,makes me laugh on the chicken box drivers say like 10 tonne of type 1 please ,when they really want to tell to her ZB off
If you can survive becoming a chef you can survive anything
One day soon you’ll get the ‘light bulb moment’ on your reversing and after that you’ll wonder what you were so worried about
Possibly because I am female I find the women so much ruder and ill-mannered than the men in transport. Of course, that’s only my experience so may not be the same for you.

Sorry been a couple of days since I looked on here. Been all over so far this week. No day the same. Mon was 1st day on me own. Was at tarmac at Skipton, Bradford, Leeds. Just aggregates. Yesterday was similar. Today we’d, Pilkington to tip off and went to Hull to a farm to load with rapemeal. On way back to Masham to tip off. Its coming slowly. Feeling a little more relaxed each day. Learning all the time. Found today that after I’d took my sheet off, that I wouldnt be allowed on site with it off. So had to leave site and put it back on. Bit embarrassing, but suppose it’s all part of learning. I like learning but hate feeling like a numpty lol
Jasesonix:
Cheers everyone, you’ve been very encouraging and helpful. Did the MPQC course yesterday. Crikey, enough to put anyone off lol.
The MPQC course puts you off laughing out loud?
Is it an amusing study then?
It was amusing to start with. Seems like at times it can be a lot of overkill on H&S.
The trainer was a little weird, which he admitted he was, but in the end he was a bit OTT. Imo the course could have been 4 hrs long not 7 hrs. But hey, we have to do it so no point grumbling.

I have 2 views on that. I think the women in the industry have felt they’ve had to harden up to fit in with the men and maybe over do it on the matcho rudo grumpy attitude. Not all women though. Secondly maybe you have an easier time with men because you’re a woman?. Maybe. I can get on with anybody, male or female. Im not sexist. I think I maybe get on better with women in general. Unless they work in a Hanson site near pateley lol
