TIA (mini stroke) and licence

Hi guys,
last Thursday I had all the symptoms of the start of a stroke at home at 0430, cold tingly right arm and leg, numb lip on right hand side and slight blurriness in my right eye. I got up and got dressed, and not knowing what to do, I phoned 111 …. they had an on duty doctor phone me back within 10 mins, by which time I felt fine again.
Problem is things escalated quickly … on duty doctor told me I had to phone my own docs as soon as they opened, they had me in for an appointment within an hour, and said I had had a TIA (a mini stroke), and arranged hospital tests for the next day, and put me on 3 different meds to try to control my BP which as the doc said was “out of control” (also stopped me from driving at all for the immediate future)
Anyhoo, saw the specialist at the hospital next day, did lots of tests, more to come next week (all very impressive), but he also said I HAD to inform DVLA ……. phoned DVLA, and apparently after having a TIA, I have automatically lost my LGV licence for 12 months !!! Bit of a shock is an understatement !!!
My question please is …. Although it says in black and white, it will be 12 months before I can apply for my LGV licence back, if I make a good recovery and the medical peeps are happy with me, could I get it back sooner■■? Any one with any experience?? Thanks in advance.

Not had the experience myself, but I know two work colleagues who did. They both had their Licences suspended for sometime they both had to be monitored and had to go through treadmill tests Consultants etc etc before the DVLA where satisfied they where OK.
Not to encouraging but they where given jobs in the warehouse for more than 12 months before getting back behind the wheel

I had two within the space of 6 months or so on opposite sides in 2005/6, was not ‘supposed’ to drive anything until given the ok to drive my car and had my class 1 suspended for 12 months by DVSA then also had to undergo extensive tests before giving it me back and that treadmill test was like running up the side of a bloody mountain …

Don’t want to hijack the OP, but who here has sufficient sick pay (my employer doesn’t pay anything more than statutory which is £90/week) or income protection insurance (NOT PPI)? I don’t have the insurance, but reading this I’ll be sorting some this week!!

are you overweight? after a health scare bit like yours it was mentioned i was overweight -iv since lost weight and BP etc all now normal.if youre overweight get dieting is my tip

Be careful talking about strokes, mini or otherwise. It’s a definite year ban, but a Transient Ischemic Attack only mimics a stroke and can be gone as soon as it appears. Take this as an early warning sign and sort your B.P out.

as i have posted on another thread…i drive for a much maligned Company, but had an accident at home :frowning: but have been paid full pay (minus first 3 days),for the 13 weeks i’ve been off work. a mate on Royal Mail had a stroke, got full pay for 6 months, then into his 6 months ‘half pay’,before being paid off…unfit to work.

Apart from the obvious benefits of the money, the peace of mind, can be worth a hell of a lot. Anyone with a medical condition can do better without stress and strain.
At my place we arent the best paid, but Ive seen colleagues on full pay whilst they need time off for various reasons, not all of them the subject of Doc`s notes type things. We can all choose to pay into a medical insurance scheme of course, but maybe not enough do. Family emergencies take many forms and not every policy pays out for what we may need.
Anyway, best wishes to all of you with troubles at the moment.

Had a TIA November 2007 while waiting to unload in Hull. Mine affected me mentally rather than physically which meant it took longer to regain my license. I was off work exactly 19 months after loads of tests and had depression as well. Dont want to scare you mate but it can be a long process

I knew someone who had a TIA and he lost his licence for a year and his was considered a very mild one .
