Today I went through a red light due to lack of concentration, I know it’s a bit of a amateur mistake. I looked up to see the lights just turn from Amber to red as my unit was going through over the solid white line. I did apply the brakes quite hard, but there was no chance of me stopping even though I was doing the speed limit. I looked in my mirror to see if there was a flash from the camera, but no flash. Has anyone else had this experience? Did they get any penalty points?. Cheers
It’s waiting in anticipation and banging yourself .
The camera as said may not be on and yes cameras no longer need to flash . look on the web and search for the type of camera it was
I have done it too with no ticket. Don’t dwell on it.
There is only one out come yes it caught you that will be on your mind.
But there are more out comes that you did not get caught . the camera not loaded. The camera not switched on.
No clear view. Partial reg only seen. Sun reflection . distorted view.
Depends on the location of the camera, if you gave use that then we might be able to offer you assistance but then approaching a set of traffic lights at 30 is a tad fast when in a truck… I was always taught … read the road and anticipate them changing
Hiya…few years ago i was flying round the A406 i see the lights on green but i knew i’d never get to
them so eased off. then even braked a little, next minute i was on the line and the lights still green
i hit the pedal…lights changed to red…no cameras in those days but it shows you never know where
you stand…in Canada theres a single light a few yards before the main lights, if the light is yellow
(i think) you know you can get through the lights no problem…if you get a yellow flashing light you’ll
most likely have to stop…brilliant idea for trucks.

I always hate approaching a green light, you never know if you’re going to have to stop or not.
Best system I saw was in Austria a few years ago, the green light started flashing for a few seconds before going to amber, gives you a bit more of a chance.

If the light was on green as you crossed the line, you were committed to keep going. If it was on amber, you should have stopped, as the law states.
Red traffic light
A vehicle must stop just behind the white stop line at traffic light.
Red and amber traffic lights
Also means stop but can prepare to go. A vehicle must not pass through the lights until the green light is illuminated.
Green traffic light
When the light turns green, you may proceed providing the way is clear.
Amber traffic light
When a single amber light is illuminated, you must prepare to stop just before the first white line. You may only proceed through an amber is you have just crossed the stop line as it changes or are too close to the stop line that stopping may cause an accident.
The best system I have seen is overseas where you have a seconds count down timer above the lights. The amber to red combinations are pretty unrealistic in a lot of the UK especially for LGVs. Its a rubbish system in the UK and very very outdated. There’s the startle factor when they change, recognition time (1/20th second), action response time then, effect time and before you know it you’re either skidding through or creeping up to a still green light that still manages to catch you out (as above poster said).

Isn’t this scenario all too common, happens to me more times than I care to count, both in my car and at work.

Hiya Dave…the problem is you get no more time allowance for that 45 ft following you

Well, I just hope nobody happens to be crossing the road in front of you the next time you lose concentration and jump a red light…
+1
You could have had much more to worry about than £60 and 3 points on your licence. How quick are you at picking up the soap? Something to bear in mind perhaps next time you’re driving without due care and attention.
Thankyou all for the replies and comments so far. This happened in Barnstaple this morning for people who are asking. I know this was a mistake and I due feel rubbish about it. I am also well aware of the potential scenarios that could have happened also. Needless to say I am only human and as such I make mistakes.
Fair play to you Toonarmy for admitting to your mistake. You only become a liability if you don’t learn from your mistakes, and I’ve a feeling you’ve learnt from this.
When I was taught to drive I was always taught that when approaching a green light I was to treat it as a red light that hadn’t yet happened! It’s done me ok over the years.
I wouldn’t ‘Fret’ over it (unless you’ve got 9 points already) the worst is 3 points & £100 fine (it went up earlier this year) the best is- it didn’t clock you.

At last someone being nice. You admit you cocked up great. Yes it could have injured someone but it didn’t. Its like the nine am shudders, could have, should have. I know I am a new driver to the industry but that does not stop me having an opinion.
From my understanding and am ready to be slated. The camera should flash twice. If you had crossed the line when it was green you will be fine. Forget about it and move on.
