Those who have came off the road, do you miss it?

its been 4 months since I left my old job for one in a factory and I’m starting to go stir crazy doing the same 10 processes every 3 mins for 37 hours per week

Never thought i’d miss driving as much as I do but I can’t justify leaving my current job for the money on offer for 99% of the jobs posted on here, i think I’m going to have a look at getting some weekend work to scratch the itch.

The key is in my opinion is to avoid for profit transport, direct for a supermarket is the best example, proper pay and a decent package of benefits and a sensible amount of hours. I go back out on the road in the new year and it can’t come soon enough.

Maybe do some holiday relief if your still on good terms with your old employer? Got me through the first few years of kicking my driving addiction!!

10 yrs since I went back in a factory, still miss driving, mostly the trips to Italy! Think it gets in ya blood!

+2. Hit the nail bang on there Contraflow… Best to work for a self-contained outfit with their own vehicles who will subby out the surplus work… the proverbial ’ scraps off the table’. At least with a large company outfit, you’ll have the benefits of company schemes, pensions etc. etc.
I did factory work once; manual work, production line boredom. Two supervisors, both women :open_mouth: . One looked like / dressed like Mary Poppins… & the other was harder to describe than ya worst nightmare… Needless to say, I stay there long…

Sounds like tarmac beckons you. Good luck whatever you decide…

… Correction to post…

I stopped driving in 2009 and did miss it at first. but I had to go where the money was.
anyway 5 years on and our hours are cut so no overtime at all. so I am thinking of returning to driving.

“One looked like / dressed like Mary Poppins”

What’s not to like ?

When the licence is taken away on a medical it hurts like hell…but I get it back in 1322 days or thereabouts , Not that I have counted them.

I did…

I regret every time I came off the road, whatever the reason. And whilst I don’t regret coming off tramping when my daughter was born (did night and occasionally day driving for ten years), I started back on tramping earlier this year. Best thing I have done in a long time.

At first… No,

after 5 + yrs… Hell yeah!

I can’t imagine going back into a factory or warehouse, doing proper hard graft, when you can do more or less what you want on the road!
You can’t stop and go to bed for an hour or watch a film when your in a ■■■■■■ warehouse.

… Greetings Baggie…
… The ’ Mary Poppins ’ look was the frilly white blouse… ( HANG ON A MINUTE, HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN THAT FILM WAS MADE… IF AT ALL )… dark long split skirt with matching stockins and suspenders… She was the good supervisor in all aspects…

As for other one… Well put it like this… One photo of her would keep any beloved offspring away from the fireplace!!!.. :smiling_imp: :imp:

Came off the road about 18 months ago and haven’t missed it at all. Got plenty of good memories of the time I spent behind the wheel but don’t miss it at all. Too busy doing stuff I really enjoy these days to miss it.

Me??

Naa, got it too easy where I am now for the same money that I was on.

It’s only 4 miles from home too, rather than the 22 miles per day just to get to work.

I got the chance to jump, so I did.

Just feel sorry for the drivers that are still there for the $%^&* they have to put up with now. (Company’s gone ‘top heavy’).

Totally miss it. My current job suits with a young family but once my daughter is old enough, I’m back tramping. Preferably European again but I won’t be fussy. I keep my driving addiction in check by doing some casual work for my old boss or Saturdays for the agency. It’s not the same but it controls my addiction  seriously, I get grumpy if I don’t get up the road at least every fortnight. I think I need help
Only 11 years to push.

I miss it, but as it was in the old days… 60’s and early 70’s for me, when you was given a motor and a place to load / unload and told to bugger off. Wasn’t the luxury kit you’ve got now, but as long as it was roadworthy, I was as happy as a pig in wotsit.

Working in the same place all day every day would drive me round the bend, as would driving nowadays with all the tracking, tacho’s, mobiles, bluetooth, etc. Anyone read 1984 ?

thanks for all the replies. Im still on good terms with my old employer so i’ll give him a bell in the new year for some casual work. I wouldn’t even mind if it was driving a van! i just want to see some more of this glorious country

unfortunately i’d be daft to give up my current job (land rover, solihul) purely because of money and benefits on offer over the next 3 years and when that passes i’d be downright stupid to leave as they increase a lot.

I quit driving in August for a 5 to 9 month contract on the railway that has now been extended for another 3 years and don’t miss it one bit, I now know my start and finish times for the next 6 months, only booked to work 35 hour week and usually less unless doing overtime, 4 week roster 16 days 1st 4 weeks then 17 days 2nd 4, all my training is paid for, 36 days holiday and taking home £580 per week. Life is good away from transport.

Suppose it can depend on what job you land after giving up driving.
For me I had 10 years off working for myself then in an office for a year for a fairly large company, but the call of the road was too great, like an itch I couldn’t scratch. Got back in the saddle quite quickly and haven’t looked back, tramping works well with my lifestyle at the moment and I’m glad to be back.

Nice to see that after 10 years everythings still the same, pay, conditions etc… truck spec improvements are nice and even heavy traffic doesn’t bother me, I just tootle along and take no notice and if I can help another road user out I will… well except tippers
