This Will Affect a Few of Our Older Members

https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-14/elderly-to-be-quarantined-for-four-months-in-wartime-style-mobilisation-to-combat-coronavirus/

People over 70 will be instructed by the government to stay in strict isolation at home or in care homes for four months, under a “wartime-style” mobilisation effort by the government likely to be enforced within the next 20 days.

It is part of a series of measures being prepared by the prime minister, health secretary, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser to prevent the health service from “falling over” and to save lives as Covid-19 becomes an epidemic in the UK.

Other measures already being planned include:

the forced requisitioning of hotels and other buildings as temporary hospitals;
the requisitioning of private hospitals as emergency hospitals;
temporary closure of pubs, bars and restaurants - some time after next weekend’s ban on mass gatherings;
emergency manufacture by several companies of respirators that would be necessary to keep alive those who become acutely ill;
the closure of schools for perhaps a few weeks, but with skeleton staff kept on to provide childcare for key workers in the NHS and police.

According to a senior government source, the perception that ministers are reluctant to make difficult and costly decisions to battle the virus is wrong. It is simply that the chief medical officer Chris Whitty and the chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance are waiting for the optimal time to force restrictions on our way of life that will be very painful.

They are deeply worried that some older people will simply die at home from neglect, after they are quarantined, so want to start the quarantine as late as possible - some time within the next five to 20 days.

The prime minister Boris Johnson and health secretary Matt Hancock are counting on neighbours and friends to rally round to make sure no one is neglected. “We are looking for a huge community effort,” said a source

The prime minister’s adviser, Dominic ■■■■■■■■■ has also initiated conversations with Uber and Deliveroo about taking food to the old and vulnerable when they are put into forced isolation.

As I have written in previous notes, all government efforts are based on the assumptions that there won’t be a vaccine within a year and that everything has to be done to protect the collapse of the health service.

What keeps ministers and officials awake at night is the fear that if the epidemic becomes too great they would have to make appalling decisions, such as that the NHS would stop treating people over a certain age, such as 65.

“Everything is aimed at making sure the NHS is not overwhelmed, to save lives and to prevent hideous choices having to be made,” said a source.

Plans are also well under way for doctors to give consultations to patients quarantined at home by video links over the internet.

PS. There are two other aspects of this wartime mobilisation

  1. Army hospitals will be used.

  2. Lockdowns of cities or parts of cities have NOT been ruled out.

Should free up some of the nicer jobs that all the old timers have been hogging for years by refusing to retire. :grimacing:

I’m always surpisd how public discourse is shaped so much by the media. It is all anyone can talk about. Had to turn the radio off as it was getting silly.

I have a feeling future generations will look back on this time and think we all went full panic nuts mode.
Seriously, why is toilet paper a priority over food?

I can’t understand why posters put a link, then actually post the content of that said article IN FULL :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: wtf !

Really■■?

It won’t be just older people. The government is looking at using Herd Immunity to overcome the current crisis and part of that strategy requires ‘at risk’ groups to be segregated.

Because if they don’t provide a link some numpty on here will start claiming “project fear” “fake news” etc.

:sunglasses:

As long as I can get stuff delivered and go in the garden I’ll live with it, can’t say I’d like it but I could live with it if I have to.

To be honest it makes perfect sense to me.
What bugs me is when someone posts just a link and in order to read the article I’m expected to register with some site I’ve never even heard of before and have no intentions of joining :unamused:

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me

When the Strategic Reserve fleet of (ERF, Sed Atki, Foden) wagons is mobilised to deal with the national emergency

Who is going to teach the current wheel attendants how to handle a constant mesh 16 speed fuller box?? - And make good progress to keep the wheels of industry turning - if over 70’s are quarantined

Yeah right.Force homeowners into car homes and then take their house to pay for it.No doubt with kick backs to the Chinese Communist Party for its help.

Since trucks can’t catch flu, there won’t be much need to since we’ll keep driving our current Euro 6’s with mostly autoboxes. Much more efficient.

I seriously doubt there are many of these old trucks in active operation (rarely see them), and since they aren’t Euro 5 that will block other uses.

Maybe finally time to send them all to the scrapheap or museums (trucks that is not the drivers!)

Exactly.
Once they reach 68 they should be forced to retire. Stick em in a home where they belong.
Although we would really have a driver shortage if that did happen. :grimacing:

Maybe carona safe but not CORONA safe. Nobody is completely safe from the corona virus. People your age and people a lot younger have already died.
Generally it affects the elderly and those with underlying conditions but as we have seen that’s not always the case.

Who can afford to retire these days?
Who can afford to even snuff it these days?

A pension aggregate - needs to equal your income at the point of retirement - or you’re looking at a huge downturn in lifestyle, trying and struggling to manage on what? - A third of your salary for most of us?
“Pension Aggregate” means that if you’ve got a forces pension, then long civvy street service somewhere, followed by one’s last 20 years at a private haulier’s yard - then YES - three pensions - should just about enable one to retire at 65 on what would amount to “what you were being paid for a full time job”…

From age 70 - you have to take a medical every year to keep your licence entitlements.
WHY would any of us plan a retirement for “beyond 70” then?

Even “Because I can’t afford to retire” - doesn’t cut it - does it?

A few months ago, I thought that the most dangerous place to find oneself in this country - was an NHS hospital for a “minor ailment”…

I STILL think that.

Stay well - and survive by being able to avoid hospitals then.
Got a minor thing like an ingrowing toenail? - Put up with it, or have it done as a minor op at the docs, if possible.
What we don’t want to be doing is
Get a minor ailment, report to GP, get ill with something caught off the others nearby, Get hospitalized, get worse from those nearby there, - die.
