This supposed shortage of drivers

I don’t think there is a current shortage of drivers, although there’s a shortage of English drivers at our place, 75% are Polish.
However, I’ve recently seen an agency wanting car transporter drivers and noticed that Hoyer are advertising for tanker drivers at Clacket Lane.
Years ago there was no way you could get into those sort of jobs.

Not forgetting me punctuation

Hi.

When I phoned my training provider I was sold up on this shortage thing and brought it.
Now I’m in employment the shortage really has not happened the older drivers have the best pick off the jobs and until 10-15 years passes and they retire it will make those tastey jobs available for the guys in doing the [zb] now. At the moment the closest haulage firms within 10-20 mins from my house both pay £7.50 per hour £1 above the minimum wage it’s a bit of a joke as i paid a total of £2800 for class 2 as I failed first time, doh. The thing is if hgv drivers don’t come together and stand up to this low pay it will continue. As new people will take it like me as I have no experience and need to get some. But trust me I will not exept any less than 9-950ph in 2 yrs other wise not bother as I can get £7.50 stacking shelves at tesco.

There is a dribble of new applicants coming and so many leaving. Don’t forget it’s a gamble for new people they might pay for test and training and just not have the ability to drive the truck I’m told by my trainers this halo ends lots one guy did 7 tests in 10 years I think that this country will be at crisis point for drivers when the real shortage bites. There are around 70drivers at our depot I would say

20 are 35-45
10 are 20-35
40 are 45-70 odd

Also the legislation rules courses they put the more it’s harder to get licence. The more the licence is worth.
You have to also think that these elder drivers had 7.5t first so all they did add a bit of tonage to there licence I drove a 3.5t van to a 20t lorrie bit of a jump it was daunting and a bit scary.

But like riding a bike now.

The shortage is in some places that have a lot of lorries like Swindon Birmingham Basingstoke etc these places have big depots. Thing is I could travel to my nearest city or town and get more ph but you have to take into cosidaration 15 mins home, 15£ less in fuel every day or travel an hour and cost me £15 off my wages every day so this is take the £1.50 less it’s just easier. Plus my employer works with me to suit my lifestyle.

I’m happy enough. The job is ■■■■ easy my 4 year old could do it with cpc

And please don’t quote taking the ■■■■ every one is entitled to there own opinion.
And I’ve done the best I can with , .

You still can’t get into those sort of jobs today, you’ve just identified part of the problem, AGENCY…:exclamation:

No, you’re doing fine, but you’ve hit the nail on the head there, the job is too easy in far too many cases, requires little in the way of strength stamina skill knowledge care nous concentration or effort, so basically anyone who can get their ticket can do it…and cos anyone can do it anyone is doing it whether they are lorry driver material or not and cheap as can do does, why pay £15 an hour for someone who doesn’t give a toss, doesn’t look after the kit, doesn’t look after the customer and is unreliable to boot…you can get dross far cheaper than that.

Drivers have, up to a point, done the turkeys voting for Christmas routine by wanting the lazy no skill no effort required with their sit on their arse steering a big motor then sit on a bay routine, thats why some jobs on rigids, especially own account, multi drop or handball work such as bakeries or big bite type skips, pay in many cases better than much of the standard artic hire and reward chauffering work, especially when you take the hours worked into account.

By the way, not having a go at you in any way nor intimating anything about you or the way you work (re-reading my post it could be misinterpreted), i just happen to think you were spot on with the ■■■■ easy quote.
