Well, a politician said it’s very likely that the road tax scheme will be ditched in favour of a more even ‘pay as you drive’ scheme. Isn’t that already up and running in the form of petrol taxes ? Getting worse every day this country.
I’d welcome that solely on the basis of it being farer and easier to administer.
I do think its unworkable without some sort of dispensation to haulage though.
Don’t get excited the next Politician to be interviewed claimed they had to change the system because with the introduction of electric vehicles the Government
would lose billions in tax revenue and they had to replace it with something.
Theres allways a way to have your pants down…could see this coming…if your motor ran on fresh air they would find a way to tax you… Great Britain… my arse.
If a politician said it, it’s lies
It won’t be a fair system unless every single foreign vehicle on British roads pays their fair share, or maybe even above the fair share. £10 per day flat should do it, £1 a day per 500 miles or part thereof for the rest of us. Numberplate recognition used. Non-payment for 7 days means confiscation/clamping of vehicle at next opportunity as is already done by HawkEye at MSA’s.
To skinflints everywhere who think everyone beneath them should pay THEIR taxes for them…
Taxes, ANY taxes will ALWAYS be unfair until those with the most pay the most. If high rollers don’t like paying high taxes, then swap jobs with me and I’ll take a 20% pay cut from your £1m per annum to a mere £800k per annum, and see who’s daft after that!
Moving abroad “to run away from tax” would also mean freeing up a well-paid job left behind, so achieves the same end. Off you go now - like you promised!
Doesn’t work like that though Mr Winseer.
Them top flyers are living abroad on paper, but still carry out their jobs here.
So they getting their wages here, but pay (lower) taxes in Monaco or wherever they ‘live’.
Exactly my point. All these threats from the monied come down to believing their bluffs about them “upping sticks and leaving” as if that would close down factories, remove funding for local enterprise, and the like.
It’s all a load of crap, but the incumbent governments all go along with it, because ultimately they are bankrolled by such people. It’s a corrupt world. It would need a benevolent dictator to introduce proper democracy and rule with consent as it says on the tin. Until then, we merely have the choice of the “least bent” to vote for.
I always vote for the candidate with the best chance of outing the incumbent!
If they don’t live up to expectations (which they never do of course) then someone else gets a go next time.
Strange thing is, I’ve never found myself voting labour, because they’ve never been in a “close second” position, and in need of my support!
Any government talking about doing away with, or cutting a tax needs to tell you where the money will be made up from. Either the answer is “more from another part of your income” or “someone richer than you” which is obviously more vote-worthy for most people.
If you scrapped VAT for example, anyone claiming VAT back with receipts would find themselves out of pocket for a while BUT eventually more jobs would go to local people, because those further away would no longer be prepared to commute for free, as would now be expected of them. Personally, I think we should become the small society, and VAT being scrapped would enable that to happen.
There are plenty who think any kind of benefit claimant is a scumbag, but from the other side, I would suggest that anyone offsetting expenses is on the fiddle to the same or much greater degree, since there is no upper limit on how many expenses can be claimed is there?
Difficult to talk about it until a rough outline of how it would work is drawn up, also we’re along way off electric cars even being remotely common so cant see anyting happening for a while.
