This 'quiet' spell

ken57:
doesnt help with all these east european drivers and other workers ,was talking to a warehouse manager who told me he interviewed some easternersoffered them 6pound an hour all hours no overtime rate same for weekend work, they took it!!! so what chance do we stand? its what the bosses want they dont care about giving us brits jobs as long as it gets done and as cheap as possible.there is a slow down in work but cheap labour doesnt help.i am not a big fan of uniuns as i just remember when they were to big for their boots but its gone to far the other way, toothless tigers now unless you work for public services…and drivers dont stick together,to busy trying to out do each other.

why do people always blame the eastern europeans for causing the demise of our countries economy. why not have a go at the chavs on the dole that wont lift a finger and just sponge off the government and not put anything back in the pot like us who pay our taxes and NI. or even the immigrants that come across here and claim everything but even some of them eventually get work and earn thier money and pay thier taxes. if the government cut spending on dole and told these people they either take £6 an hour or they dont get nothing then we would be in a better state than we are in now.

it is not always the eastern europeans that cause it. they may cause it a little bit by sending the money abroad so it isnt being spent in this country but can they be blamed for the rises in prices of fuel and everything else? no they cant. i know they do sometimes take jobs but its more than likely because some of the brits are too lazy to do it.

dont get me wrong i am very proud to be british but some of the values of this country and a select few of the people in it ■■■■!

thats my 2p worth!

Because when you are White and British it is common practice to blame everyone thats different in language, race and creed for everything that goes wrong.not the FACT that in most cases Eastern Europeans are loyal, reliable and very hard working unlike your average Brit manual worker who has Friday and Monday off ,texts or plays with their phone all day and talks about how drunk or off their faces they get and is generally a lazy ■■■■ thinking they deserve Directors wages

Proud and British dont exist in my vocabulary in the same sentence and as far as being a select few i’d have to disagree on that too.

Apart from that Gibsla I know what you’re saying. :sunglasses:

I have the dubious task of training Eastern europeans to drive around London for Ocado. Most of these people are decent hard working souls. Most have left everything behind including their family. I have come into contact with architects, qualified teachers, it experts and university degree educated people. I ask them why?

They get £8 an hour ( average) delivering say 10 to 16 drops of online food orders per day mostly in or around London. The turnover of employees is drastic , with a majority lasting 3 months or so. The job is demanding and the ratio to British workers is around 3.1 within the company.

Their driving skills on arrival are in the majority dangerous. I have had to get rid of lot’s of them even after 3 days training. However my decision is not final as the company assessors take them out and throw them back in the loop. Once we have finished our 3 days we wash our hands, good or bad.

Some of them undergo a one day course having learnt how do drive on the left around a airfield marked out with cones , simulating roundabouts ect in their prospective country.

Of course driving around cones is nothing compered to driving round junctions ( which confuse even the most experienced) on the M11 or negotiating a spiral roundabout. . Or the M25 roundabout near Barnet. Or the inner ring road plus bus lanes, cameras, idiot London drivers and alike

The difference between our way and their way of driving is indeed a gulf.

But most are a pleasant bunch and a refreshing change to the British attitude problem

Just an update from me…

Ended up parked in Kent for two days waiting for a load then got sent to Portbury for a load to Scotland. Ended up in one week, one load down and one up. 17 cars in all, usually 50+. Company was subcontracting work this time last year.

Got a load down to Coalville and Coventry for Monday, told to take a good book!!!

We’ll all be on the Dole by Xmas.

…and I will rent a taxi this time and fiddle the tax man.

(above text is not admissable in a court of law)

Not having a go mate, but I’ve been on the dole, as I imagine quite a lot of people have. YES there’s plenty of scum on it with no intention of doing anything but picture this -

With the way the industrie’s going at the moment this is perfectly feesable, you get to work one day to find you and several others have been laid off, you ring around for the rest of the week no-one wants to know because they’re struggling to find work for their drivers too.
You sign on, for a measley £43 a week as it’s all you can do to help with the bills a bit. Suddenly you’re one of those scum (in everyone’s eyes) you’re trying your damndest to get work but the jobcentre treat you like a scrounging scumbag like “the rest of them” and try to get you into jobs like packing frozen turkeys and being the trolley boy at tesco’s
That’s not for you - you’ve put a lot of time effort and money into learning this job, but no-one’s taking drivers on because they’ve not got enough work for the drivers they’ve got, or worse still, they’re taking on polish or other foreign drivers for £2 less an hour than you’d be happy with.

Ask yourself, is it fair to tar everyone with the same brush?

You say that they are in control however, it is highly likely that interest rates should be and have been considerably higher than what they are and have been. They are too clever. They have an inflation target based on what they call the consumer price index. Of course, the government decide what goes into this index. Guess what? House prices weren’t. A member of the BOE recently said that House Prices should be included. How convenient now that they are falling. I can’t remember what their stated inflation rate is…around 3% whereas their target I think is 2%. I am so glad that the cost of living is only going up by such a small amount.

Good point that house prices aren’t included in the inflation figures. Inflation last time out was 3.8% but I think that most people think that general inflation is nearer double that…

The firm I work for are as busy as ever, we have 6 depots around the country, turnover of drivers is quite low. We pay weekly (not a fortune but certainly enough to attract drivers) rather than by the hour - which only encourages drivers to “drag the job out” to their advantage.

We charge some of the highest rates in the industry and have had a fuel surcharge mechanism in place for at least 3 years so that we can recover the costs of the rising price of diesel. Our customers pay it or go elsewhere. We have over 1000 customers at any one time. We have not seen any downturn in business yet. Turnover has more than doubled in 8 years to around £50m, we are in a niche market and without being complacent we are good at what we do.

All this doom and gloom is fuelled by the media, so what if house prices are on the slide? It doesn’t matter unless you need to move house urgently. And the majoity of people that have been a home owner for 4-5 years or more are still sitting on a nice bit of equity in their home anyway.

I think all of that will be gone by this time next year. Me, I sold in September at the height of the market and I’m renting and waiting out the crash so I rub my hands with glee every time the Haliwide monthly house price figures come out…

We all moan when its quite in Spring and summer, then when Autumn and Winter come along we’re all complaining we’re rushed off our feet and hasn’t the TM an idea about the rest we all need and blah de blah.

I’m glad its like this. If it wasn’t there’d be nothing to moan about

I wish I could be glad :unamused: Five of us got made redundant last week due to ‘slumping sales and increasing fuel prices’. Everywhere seems to be dead quiet now with very few places taking people on. So not much to be glad about here :imp:

everyone is a bit quiet at the mo. mostly i think because its summer and everyone is on holiday but i do think we are going into a worldwide recession to rival the 1930’s. The entire economy has been based on house prices rising. thanks to greedy bankers the house market has now died which has cut off many peoples source of credit.
We’re all doomed i say!

thanks to greedy bankers the house market has now died which has cut off many peoples source of credit.

Nothing whatsoever to do with greedy people taking the credit in the first place, then…?

Id have to agree with you there Lucy, too many people prepared to take on 125% mortgages and loans then complain when they realise theyve over committed

i drive for the royal mail, and even were realy quite at the moment, it has been since crimbo!

No slowdown with us in Fuel/Lubes…I`m class 1 but only drive hgv at the momment as the money is better…

Quiet spell has just claimed another victim - laid off from the tipper job yesterday - 18 drivers there and 6 of us got the bullet
