It sounds like a job that could suit me nicely, trunking to a limited number of depots so easy to get used to the runs
You need to get out of this having to be in your comfort zone and restricting yourself to trunking and containers and only on routes you know.
You’re not going to learn much sticking doing the same work and there’s only so much of it about. You’re not going to learn where anywhere is if you stick to stuff that goes to the same place. We all started somewhere, we’ve all made mistakes, we’ve all got lost - its all part of learning the job. But we learned from that which meant we could do more stuff which meant more work and making yourself far more employable than the guy who had only ever done one type of work going to a handful of places.
MickyB666:
Bringg Bringg “Hello it’s your agency here, the client has cancelled your scheduled work for tonight.”
= We found someone cheaper who’d do it.
.
That’s probably how it went
Or they’ve given it to someone else to keep them happy (ish) and on the books. I doubt DH are the only agency to do this and claim “it’s fair to everybody.”
MickyB666:
Still no work… … … if this is how it is going to be I will be taking a long holiday somewhere sunny next year.
Why not go on holiday now ?
Though while your on the beach no doubt the phone will ring, “hello can you do me a favour, and do me a 6am tomorrow?”
I did happen to me several times, and when I explained I’m on holiday, their response was… “I though the ring tone sounded a bit funny when I rang you”

I booked a weeks holiday for the end of Jan’ in the Canary Islands last year, that holiday is stuck in the middle and stopping me booking anything longer.
This is the first time I have been through these months as a HGV driver and not knowing what to expect I planned for the worst case scenario (no work for 2 months, 1 slow month), putting some cash to one side to cover this period from earnings made prior to Christmas however now it is here, even after only two weeks, I am finding it is frustrating just hanging around waiting for the phone to ring and even though I put some money to one side to cover this period I would prefer not to have to spend it.

For a newbie you don’t seem to have done too bad - better than quite a few more experienced hands who are on their annual moan in.
You’ve planned for it financially, now you’ve got to plan for the reality of it - how are you going to fill your time?
NB: Don’t be hanging by the phone all day, you’ll realise at the end of the dark months that you’ve wasted the time.
If you sit waiting for the phone to ring it’ll eat you up, as you’ve pointed out, you’ve planned for the bleak season, fill your time with something and enjoy the rest.
MickyB you’re a newbie. So what? Don’t let that fact put you off fella, you already have some experience under your belt so why not use this quiet period to get out there and sell yourself? Stick your work gear in your boot and get out and knock on doors. Being new to the job matters not one bit if you are in the right place at the right time.
A good time to do this is around 8am on a Monday morning when a regular driver with a hangover hasn’t turned in! Right place right time and Robert’s your Mothers Brother. Plus it gets you away from the hateful agencies too.
