The problem is that most drivers will not want this as they believe they are better than average and it will probably be a political vote loser for any Govt.
ALL drivers are better than average - stans ter reason dunnit.

Aah well, New Year and all that.
(I’m backing off within this division ridden nation whilst our leaders pretend to be solving world problems as the home front has us being angry and at each other’s throat).
The choice seems to be - better safer drivers or lower speed limits…
I agree with this statement Rog but, there are so many bad drivers on the road already. How would it work?
I for one would issue a two week ban for any car driver that makes a speed limited truck overtake! I’m sure that would wake them up to the fact that we have a job to do!
Why do Truck drivers who stick to the speed limit on single carriageways then drive to the limiter on duel carriageways? Gee that’s a real tough one, could it be that most Single carriageways are winding roads in comparison to duel carriageways?
The truck that keeps to forty on single carriageways then speeds up on duel carriageways perhaps he/she is trying to make up for lost time, perhaps they are unfamiliar with the road, weary of tax cameras, perhaps only recently gained their HGV licence, concerned with sharp cornering with the load they are carrying, im sure there are many reasons but few I would put down to malice,
as for hourly paid drivers pulling over to allow others to pass? delaying your journey for what ever reason may leave you vulnerable to accusations of fraud, I have no doubt driver owners declare every job they do to the tax man and so avoid such scurrilous accusations,
Well, I used to stick to the limits when i was back in the UK. But now Its foot to the floor all the way down the highway 75mph in a ‘Juggernaught’ as the papers would say. I honestly dont think i could go back to driving a truck in the UK after being able to drive so fast over here.

It’s coming your way:
"Starting January 1, 2009, most large trucks driven in Ontario will be required to use electronic speed limiters that cap their speed at a maximum of 105 kilometres per hour.
Studies conducted by the federal government, through Transport Canada, have demonstrated environmental, safety and cost saving benefits of speed limiters. Ontario and Québec are now working together to jointly launch and implement speed limiter regulations.
Several transportation companies have already limited their vehicles’ speed to 105 km/h or less in response to the many benefits of speed limiters."I expect Alberta won’t be far behind

not really…

i don’t think so, in many cases i am sure it is down to malice, the childlike desire to annoy others/get one over on them, or just plain stupidity. there are no end of drivers who will sit flat out on the A500 dual bits, then when they get onto the single-track stretch W of J16 its down to 40. and as anyone whose been along there knows, traffic-permitting there is nothing inherently unsafe about doing 56 or whatever the limiter is set to.
when i am sticking to the limits, i stick to them all, including 49/50 on a dual. anyone who does 40 on a single carriageway and flat out on a dual is a ■■■■ of the highest order.

the difference between being a [ZB] of the highest order or not being the time lapse of when you decide to stick to the limits or not i suppose?
Our motors travel regularly to Dunbar Cement works up the A1, mostly S,C. from Morpeth to Dunbar i was stopped by a police motorbike and he said to me he had followed me some miles and i were travelling on my lilmiter at 56mph,he said he had seen our motors quite frequently lately and he said i have to warn you now Keep to 50mph on the S.C. obviously slowing for the cameras, and we wont have a problem but if we are seen to be abusing it and driving on the limiter all the time there was gona be a problem and they would start busting us,he also added spread the word to our other drivers to save him doin it and he let me go adding 50mph is a safe speed up there and all his colleagues agreed and only stopped lgv’s for goin above that,he also said we had a nice lookin fleet.smart…Thankyou mr officer very kind.

Get that in writing, and his number!!! That would make a cracking defence.

How about it possibly being inherently anti-social?

i dont mind the guys doin 40 on a sc but it does get on me [zb]s when you get too a little bit of dc and they floor it to the limiter so u cant get past then the min the back on sc they brake down to 40 again, why couldnt he just trundle along to 45 on the dc n let ev1 past and that way nobody really gettin held up and it would stop the stupid overtakers chancing there lives on bad bends, this happens reguarly on the a9 in scotland n am sure highlander would back me up on this
Got this to the extreme this morning.FIVE tractor units travelling in convoy up the A9.1st one was a bit in front of the rest, but they were just nose to tail, bang on 40.Cars couldn’t get past, let alone trucks.Got to the overtaking lane at Kincraig, straight up to 55.Why? This is still sc.maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= … &z=17.This is only a short bit of 3-lane road(2lanes n/b,1s/b).It was like the wacky races as cars went for it big time. Then back down to 40 at the end of the o/t lane.Tossers. One of them pulled into a lay-by at Aviemore, but the rest carried on regardless. They even passed a VMS with the message “Allow faster vehicles to pass safely”.Obviously this didn’t apply to these 4 cretins.
Got to the o./t lane at Carrbridge and exactly the same as Kincraig .Finally got to the d/c at the Slochd, and again straight up to 55.By this time I was second vehicle behind them,so get into outside lane and let the downhill stretch do the work for me

before i get ripped apart and told am talking bollox i dont have a problem with the drivers who do the speed limit for that road as at end of day it there licence but it is not much of an ask that when you get to a d.c to just trundle at 50 and let the ones who want to pass get past. that way nobody is getting upset and noboy would take chances and pass on some of the bends they do pass on. as alot of vms signs say on the a9 frustration causes accidents, it says that for a reason because that what frustration leads too.

Without wishing to be too smug, I expect that behaviour to be a norm when planning & setting off - so that when it doesn’t the journey gets a billy-bonus.
To me it means not getting red-mist when encountering pillocks because anticipating thoughtless eejits is a daily norm. If my life depended on being in front of him I’d have set off thirty seconds earlier (though being a dolly I’m mindful to keep sweet with the planning & debrief staff) but always consider whacking up to an indicated 10% on the limiter or cruise at any road speed because isn’t that a frequent norm too?
Am sure that plenty will be more than happy to come down on me for this but i drive to the conditions of the road. SC’s Flat out where possible and safe Dc’s Flat out, Mway Flat out but that one goes without saying. Although some drivers dont and when they are overtaken they put there bloody foot down because they dont use limiters. Fair enough some people dont like the and i will not slag you off for it your the driver, but let me bloody overtake you first instead of making me look like a nob.
And as for Sainsburys B/Stoke drivers that hill on the way from nubury to basingstoke is still 40!!! if i want to go fast and overtake you i will and its not your right to speed up to slow me down at the top you are not a copper and the hill is not DC.
Rant over.
wibble:
TESCO, ASDA and the rest, if you’re on an A road, pull in and let them pass.
Drive a lot for Tesco, and I do just that. Whether it’s pulling in to a layby for a few mins or it’s taking a roundabout 3 times to let traffic that’s build up behind me pass. I try to be as considerate as possible, but I refuse to let some impatient stressed out drivers push me to do more than the speed limit. It’s my tachoes that will be looked through if I get involved in anything whether it’s my fault or not. And you know what line they’ll take if you’ve been speeding. I also have a clean license and I intend to keep it that way.

its worse when you have no where to pull over even if you wanted to , your driving at the SC speed limit, yet certain drivers, driving certain trucks for certain industries come steaming up behind you at warp 9. credit to them they patiently sit behind you for about 30 seconds, they thenpull half way out to see if its clear then if its not they turn the attention to you the pain in the arse. and use bully boy tactics to try and intimdate you
, they tailgate, flash their lights, keep pulling out then pulling back in still keeping close to your back bumper. thats what ■■■■■■ me off.
if there is a little hard shoulder i will happily put my left wheels on it to let them pass and continue on their warp 9 drive. but if there is no where to pull over or even use the little hard shoulder they then take risks, they get bored or ■■■■■■ off and overtake even if say a petol tanker is coming the other way, keeping so close to your truck you wonder if your mirrors will survive the ordeal, they then start indicating as soon as their cabs passes yours, tanker flashes his lights and does some evasive manouvers and you end up braking really hard or driving on the verge. thats what gets me. i dont hold you up for fun, if i can make you overtake safe or legal come to that then i will accomdate you by driving on the hard shoulder etc.

There is no need for that kind of driving my rule if i make it at warp 9 thats good if not popo happens and deal with it. I say to myself i’m the one in the wrong not you doing the speed limit.
