Thinking of doing ADR course

Hi guys

Does anyone of you know of a good and reputable training centre where I could do an ADR course.
I leave in east London, so anywhere in west Kent or west Essex, or east London would be best, but could commute to anywhere in London really, preferably inside M25 or just outside of it.
I passed my Module 4 CPC last February, so if I did my ADR course now , would it count towards my next CPC 35 hours ?

Thanks

Think you need to speak to dieseldave he is the authority on this

We have sent many people to www.manortraining.co.uk for ADR courses. They are based close to Basildon in Essex. They are also JAUPT approved so their ADR training counts as driver CPC as well.

just make sure where ever you go will give you the correct hrs for ur dcpc , and remember if you don’t pass you still get the required hours dcpc as its not test based

Hi hkloss1,

There isn’t a vast choice of ADR providers in your chosen area, but here is a selection taken from the SQA master list of approved ADR providers.

:bulb: You’ll need to ask about DCPC, because it’s NOT automatic.
:bulb: To save any possible nasty surprises, please also ask about whether VAT and SQA exam marking fees are included in the price that any ADR provider quotes you.
:bulb: If you do this methodically, you’ll arrive at an honest comparison.

I haven’t had any dealings with any of the providers I’ve listed below, so they are in no particular order.

Yes, provided that you’ve asked the right questions and expressed your wishes at the time of making your booking.

Please post up if you need any other help.

Thank you guys for all your replies.

@dieseldave
Thank you for those addresses.
They all seem a bit far away from where I live.
Would it be OK to ask you to provide some other names from the other parts of London , please? As long as they are inside M25 I gould even attend courses in the west, north and south of London, as I could go there by tube, train.
The only one that looks not too far away is that training centre in RM7 0ES, but I’ve never heard about it when looking for a driving school and they seems to offer Cat C and C+E courses as well

Sorry mate, but your chosen area doesn’t have that many approved ADR providers to choose from. :frowning:

Thank you dieseldave

the ones in RM20 and HA9 look within sensible distance from where I live , so I might give them a call and ask a few questions.
I’ve also noticed that Wallace driving school has ADR courses in their offer.
If anyone know anything good or bad about those ADR training providers I would want to know about it.

Thank you dieseldave once again for your help.

Hi hkloss1,

Wallace driving school do not seem to be on the latest SQA approved ADR provider list.

There are a couple of possible reasons for this:

  • They have only made their application recently, and gained approval, but it’s not yet showing on the list.
  • Wallace’s have arrangements with an SQA approved ADR provider to conduct ADR ‘mobile’ ADR courses on their premises on their behalf.
  • Wallace’s book you, then take a cut, then send you elsewhere.

None of these reasons should be viewed as being suspicious, and there might even be some other good reason.

They shouldn’t really be showing the SQA logo on their website IF they aren’t an approved provider, but that’s between them and SQA.

:bulb: If you choose this provider, it might be worth asking about this, because you could probably get the same course cheaper directly from an approved provider at that provider’s own premises.

If you don’t mind a trek over to the other side of town, I can recommend Training Link in Feltham.

traininglinkeurope.com/train … neral-adr/

Did my ADR with them, very good instructor who made the course enjoyable and JAUPT approved so got the 21 hours of CPC too.

Hi dieseldave

that’s exactly what I was thinking when I read that information on Wallace’s website about their ADR courses.
They might be simply collecting names and money and send them to some other places.
Worth giving them a call anyway, to see what they have to say and what price they’ll quote.

Thanks for the info

Hi AJF3011

thatnk you for that link
I wouldn’t mind going to Feltham. It is a bit far away, but I’m the type of person I would consider anything.
I’ve just had a look at their website and it says they conduct their ADR courses over 3.5 days, so I guess they do not do tanker modules, which would take additional 1.5 days if I’m not mistaken.
I thought about doing ADR and those tanker modules as well at the same time.
Do you know by any chance what is the pass rate at these ADR exams?
Does it make it easier to get a job ?
I’m a newly qualified Class 2 and also newly qualified Class 1 driver , so I thought if I did ADR it would make it easier for me to find a proper driving job.
Why did you do yours?
Was it because your company paid for it, or paid for it yourself?
How was getting a job with an ADR ticket?

Just interested in other peoples thought and experiences.

Thanks for the tip AJF3011

Hi hklos1

The company mentioned by AJF3011 is on the SQA list of approved ADR providers as follows:

Training Link Europe Ltd
1st Floor
Unit 6, Felthambrook Industrial Estate
Feltham
TW13 7DU
Tel: 0208 751 6000
Email: info@traininglinkeurope.com
Contact: Mr John DeBruin

It’s certainly a provider that you could consider, but I hadn’t mentioned them because of the distance from you.

Do you really think ADR is worth the money?

Personally speaking , Their a rip off!

Soon you’ll be doing an ADR course - on how to do a ADR course!

Smith System EMEA Ltd
Heron House
109-115 Wembley Hill Road
Wembley
HA9 8DA
Tel: 0208 900 9038

This is the company who take care of the ADR Refresher courses for Esso and Shell in the Essex area.

I did a refresher course taken by Henry and he was excellent.

I did my course last September in Glasgow (not local to you really), however I think it is worth it without a shadow of a doubt.

It opens more employment opportunities and gives you some time towards your DCPC at the same time.

The extra pay for ADR work is not huge to be fair, but at least with a pass you can apply for jobs that require it.

Hi mate

My firm put me through my ADR, I just did the packages (excluding explosives & radioactive) as that’s what’s relevant to our business.
I know Training Link do a tanker module as well but couldn’t offer you any advice on that I’m afraid.
Not sure how many tanker operators would take on a newly qualified driver, you may find you’d need to get a few years commercial driving experience before they’d consider you.
My feeling is you’d stand more chance of a start with a general haulage firm that deals with ADR packages rather than a tanker firm, but someone with more experience than me on the tanker side may be a able to give you better advice than I can.

Getting your ADR won’t necessarily make finding a job easier, as I’m sure you’re aware lack of 2 years experience can be a barrier, but it does open up a few more possibilities.

Not sure of the pass rates for the course, but 10 drivers from our firm did it and all passed, and it’s fair to say none of us are exactly Mensa candidates :grimacing:

If I was funding my own CPC training I’d rather do things like ADR, Hiab course etc that might increase my employment opportunities.

Best of luck with the job hunting & training, hope all goes well.

Aidan.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions,
if anyone else has anything else to add , please feel free to do so.
So, from what I gather there is no point doing tanker modules as no one will let me drive tankers without experience, so I might do only the basic ADR course, that lasts 3.5 days I think.
What are the most common jobs that ADR drivers do?
