No Pro’s that I can think of other than being home every night. The biggest Con is dealing with the general public especially on the late night services.
I have just gone back to bus driving after doing class 1 work and much to my surprise am finding it ok.I have been driving buses, coaches and trucks for 30 years now and had become fed up with agencies, rdcs and jumped up security guards.
I now know exactly my hours for the next 125 weeks, i leave when the timetable tells me to and i only have to work 38 hours a week if i want to.
Yes, passengers can be trouble but it very much depends on how you handle the situation.Go for it, a psv is always handy to have. Good luck.
As a new pass you will get all the rotten shifts, late finishes, weekends etc
almost all bus companies do school runs (even if it just a service via schools)
Human beings are by far the hardest cargo to carry because they can argue back if they don’t like what your doing.
BUT
Although I wouldn’t want to go back to it, the different skills involved in pcv driving are worth having. (More emphasis on smoothness, safety and comfort of your passengers come first)
If you find you don’t like it, you will find that your driving has improved anyway with the different style.
If you want to give it a go, good luck to you, but watch out. If they are going to train you, they will try and tie you in for a 2 year period and if you don’t like it and leave, they will try and bill you for the cost of training.
I was considering doing my category D test a couple of years ago, when I applied for the provisional the DVLA requested a medical form even though I had a current LGV licence
Thanks for the replies and advice. The main plus point of the offer is the fact the bus depot is only a 12 minute pushbike ride from my front door thus saving me £20 a week in petrol getting to and from work.
Yes they want to tie me in for 2 years, but if I don’t like it I’m sure they would get fed up of me defecting vehicles for the slightest (yet legitimate) problem
The thought of the cargo unloading themselves appeals to my twinging back too.
i made the change well not to a bus driver but took the root into mobile cranes and tower cranes yes i know we are hated just as much as tractor drivers for being slow but the pace of life is not so hetic but the good thing is i get to drive artics still just to keep my hand in anyway i think it is good to have a few extra things to turn anyway i is going ceya all later
