Think I got zapped by a speed camera

Coming back eastbound on the M62 near Huddersfield, I was fully loaded coming down the hill at 50mph on the exhaust brake (telematics!) when an anonymous grey box at the side of the road flashed twice at me. My first thought was that I’d missed a gantry sign, but the next gantry was blank. There were no other vehicles on the road at that point.
Anyone else had this?
ps definately doing 50.

I wouldn’t worry about it mate. I often see these “ghost” flashes, sometimes even when no vehicles are near them. Anyway, you were within the speed limit so no offence occurred.

Sorry mate, did I not tell you? I’ve set up the Cavey spotters club!
You’ll be as famous as Mark Dixon by the time I’m finished!

There was one on the Avonmouth bridge years ago. It looked like Jimmy Saville was havin a good time as it was flashing at anything and nothing :grimacing:

did it look like that?

Doesn’t sound true unless the law has changed. Truvelo piezo cameras are forward facing and they DO flash. They have a normal white flash bulb with a red filter to reduce glare but they do flash. A lot of misunderstanding led to people thinking they were infrared and didn’t show a visible flash.

Was there anything coming the other way? Those bizarre ones that appeared on the side of gantries do seem to randomly flash and I suspect sometimes somehow it’s getting confused by the car going the other way. Not sure if those actually know about temporary speed limits which are likely taken care of by the overhead cameras so sounds like this camera was just bored.

Whats really bad about them is the flash is very bright when you’re driving the other way and is effectively directed at the innocent traffic - not a good idea.

They are Hadecs cameras on the sides of gantry’s, and usually only operate if the road limit in force at the time is exceeded, ie: 50mph, or if no limit shown, 70mph.

There are more and more of them being put on gantry’s after the smart motorways have been set up in West Yorkshire. They are currently being put up on our local stretch of the M1 at Wakefield, and will be live soon as the works finish within the next month. I believe that they are already in force in some parts of the M25 and have been for a while.

If you subscribe to the PGPSW speed camera database, I have spotted them from the Nottingham area all the way to Leeds, and should be on your device by now.

They’re all gonna be bright yellow soon, apparently - and then left to get covered in grey/brown mould etc.

That is actually old news and was going around 12 months or so ago when they finished the Smart motorway.
