There's dangerous goods then there's

Mate of mine sent me this. Carried it over Christmas. 104 tonnes of the stuff. Not unusual for us. Lithium batteries make me the most nervous given record as widow makers. What’s the nastiest stuff you’ve carried? My old man worked for Denby for a bit and carried explosives too

Something really dodgy to do with Chinook helicopters to Boscombe Down, all I knew was that it came under ADR regulations and didn’t think anything of it until I got there and picked the ■■■■■■ up to show me where to go when I got there - can’t remember what but I still thought :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: when he told me what it was

Royal mail won’t let you post LIPO batteries any more, i am amazed they are allowed on airfreight

Yeah you me both. It’s a bit of an open door that subject. These guys weren’t so lucky

Unfortunately the authorities resist. Probably due commercial pressure. No one gives a crap when “only” a freighter goes down, even though it’s a 400 tonne one, unless it hits a house.

Freight Dog:
a freighter.

Id give my left nut to fly one.

Almost 3 ton of fireworks. Nearly said no when i was first offered it.

Over Xmas i had often Net Weight as Gross weight on the Documents, and i was doing that quit for a while.

I know this won’t sound much but as part of a mixed load four 2.5 liter jars of picric acid found at the back of a school chemistry prep store that were over 20 years old . Go look up what happens when that stuff drys out ! Scary

Regularly carried full loads of fireworks.

Hiya i used to pick up small flasks of olium from Jamaca road london years ago NOT nice stuff

I use to bring shotgun cartridges back from Italy, they said don’t worry they would only go off one at a time :open_mouth:
Im sure Dieseldave would have done the same load for Barco.

I don’t think explosives is to bad to carry, don’t see what the big deal is with them.
But maybe that’s cause I know a lot about ADR and explosives.
They ain’t going spontaneously combust.
Even if you crash nuffing going happen unless it turns into a blazing fire.

Carried them around for years.

Nasty stuff, that olive oil. I think you mean oleum, bud.

About 4 years ago did a hush hush transhipment job for the yanks out of the Welsh port of Newport to an american navy freighter anchored in the river, the stuff whatever it was came in an armed escorted convoy into a fenced off and guarded area where my ship was. About six armed guards came out with us and stayed on board until the job was completed, and no one could or would tell me what we carried.

He did indeed!

The job was from the factory at Frosinone (Italy) to a storage facility near Kidderminster for Olin-Winchester.

22-23t at a time and double manned.
(Until Tom Bell tried it on his own and got captured in Germany   )

Just to put everybody’s minds at ease, anybody can carry 1.4S in ANY quantity and WITHOUT AN ADR LICENCE.

That means anything that has this label on the box(es)

1.4S.jpg

Happy days!!

Same here mate, but I’d just add that a boss might need to be careful when allocating drivers for carrying fireworks.

Lots of fireworks are 1.4S, which can be carried in any quantity, even by a non-ADR trained driver.

However, NOT ALL fireworks are 1.4S.

The bigger fireworks can be 1.1G, 1.2G, 1.3G or 1.4G all of which have various ‘freeby’ limits, above which an ADR trained driver is required.

1.4G.jpg

Care is needed because the ‘freeby’ limits are different depending on whether the journey is national or international.

Strange to say, but the ‘freeby’ limits for a UK journey are far more generous than for an international journey. :open_mouth:

Yeah that will change if it’s mixed loads aswell with the compatibility groups and quantity of the explosives.
Due to the amount of units you can mix per load with certain groups.

Turns into a pain in the hoop.

Worst has to be, was some spontaniously combustible substance in 3 flasks on a 20 ft flat between Hull docks and ICI Wilton, were they would swap the full flasks for 3 "empty ones.
Stuff was that volatile, it wasn’t allowed to sit on the dock, so was straight off the boat onto the trailer, and could only take it back to the dock just before the boat was due to sail, can’t remember what it was called, just knew it was bloody scarey stuff.
