There is shortage everywhere apparently, even here in Bulgaria where the pay compared to the rest of the country economy is a lot better, even 85 Spaniards and 35 Greek drivers are working for Bulgarian companies. We have the same shortage problems like UK, just read in the press.
What is the solution, I don’t know, there must be more experienced people then me to say, but if this is the same big problem across Europe, ought to to be dealt with accordingly.
In Bulgaria the shortage of professional drivers is more then 5000 according to the Union of transport companies, main reasons are: Drivers age, low pay(compared to western EU drivers), daily stress, problems in the sector such as training new drivers - young people choose different job field because getting licence is expensive and time consuming etc.

bring back the old school route - you work as a yard lad - save some cash - pay for some training and go out and get your own licence.
it really boils my ■■■■ with this expecting society we have nowadays, why should people get stuff for free because they are too bone idle to go and find work save up and train for the role they want?
if not offer student loan type funding so they pay back when they work but make them pay x amount of it up front (this will get rid of the whole I don’t want to ever work brigade).
Totally agree m8 I work with 2 lads both have there class one licence paid for by dhss and both have said they would never go on to artics ■■■■ money and long hrs that’s there gripe what a waste of a licence and tax payers money I paid for both of mine out of my own pocket makes me blood boil
Agency, I do odd shifts through the summer but pretty much full-time from September to May, for the last 3 years I’ve been Fedex only so I’m on parity with their ‘casual’ drivers.
I know I could get a lot better hourly rate driving class1 skitter boxes but getting kicked and covered in ■■■■ doesn’t really appeal any more, that’s how I started out 30 odd years ago and at least it was our own livestock
With a couple of exceptions all the companies round here have put their rates up quite a bit.
Dixon Grace Recruitment supply Gretna, don’t know about the Parkhouse and Marston Gate hubs. I think there’s another hub somewhere in the SW. Reckon Bestbooties will know more.

Eh?
Why would any ‘yard lad’ want to save up to pay for an HGV licence, when he could just simply stay as he is (as a yard lad) and earn the same money, for less responsibility!
STAVRO:
Yep, there must be a driver shortage [emoji106]
There is, didn’t you know!? Soon you won’t have any food in your house, clothes on you back, fuel in your car etc, because there aren’t any drivers to deliver…
Seany:
Not a driver shortage. A shortage of good drivers.
Trouble is, a “Good Driver” as defined by too many employers is one that’ll work for near minimum wages without argument… A “Bad Driver” is NOT one that smashes up the kit, and never gets behind the wheel again but rather ‘one that argues endlessly with the boss, and otherwise tries to stand up for themselves’.
Both issues 0% to do with actually driving a truck of course.
One day, the entire “Drivers Forum” will be moved to Bully’s Bar as no longer being relevant to driving either.
The new Sainsbury’s DC at Crick/DIRFT doesn’t have a dedicated fleet based there as they reckon the industry is saturated with labour and it can easily be made to work using surplus capacity from other Sainsbury’s DC’S/Subbies. I do begrudgingly agree with this assertion I am ashamed to admit…

So that’ll be why the yard is always half empty everytime I drive past it. It’s the quietest RDC that I have seen.

I’ve no idea what you’re saying, but although they say your licence can take up to X amount of days you might find it comes back a lot quicker if all is well. Mine took a week.

LIBERTY_GUY:
The driver shortage is predominantly in certain sectors of the HGV haulage industry, rather than the industry as a whole.
I just hope some wannabe truck driver doesn’t waste their own money, thinking they going to have a plethora of jobs laid before them, just to be offered the utter crud that is bidvest, brakes, etc.
Too late I’ve working for the “crud” as it was the only thing on offer at the time, money’s not bad and I actually enjoy it!
