Theory tests and resits

Was at my local DSA test centre today to sit my CPC mod 2. Checked in put all my stuff in the locker and sat in the waiting area.

I was one of the first there and could hear the conversations over at the booking in desk. There must have been 7-8 people being booked in for the 12:30 sitting. Other than myself and ONE other person everyone else was there for a resit for the car theory or HP.

Now my personal opinion is that the theory test is very easy and the HP is hit and miss really as everyone does see hazards differently etc etc.

It really got me thinking about road safety and also the test as well. I believe that theory always backs up practical and vica versa, but these tests appear to really easy, with or even without study as most of it is just common sense. I could understand the amount of people there to resit if the tests were actually challenging. But when these people eventually pass the test and go back to there instructor to say its passed they never mention anything to do with theory again, i know this from personal experience and also my partners experience learning to drive as well.

I thought, I wonder how many RTA’s have happened because of people not knowing how to use the road properly due to a lack of theory knowledge. Surely a more stringent test would be much better for road safety and it would save lives as well. And hey even the DSA would make more money from resits etc.

I actually thought the CPC layout was pretty good. Case study on the left and then questions on the right. I think this would work well for the car theory test as well, maybe even in addition to the normal 100 question theory. Or maybe a big overhaul on the actual questions.

What are your opinions and thoughts?

It would be NICE if everyone could assimilate and retain the theory knowledge

What seems to happen in most cases is that they retain enough to pass a test then forget much of it afterwards

Just like practical driving - there is a test and then … nothing

i would presume that most people fail the theory test because of the Hazard Perception test part of it

the thing with it is, you see the hazard, click the mouse, if you click too quickly, it doesn’t recognise it and it goes down as a miss

there are ways of ‘fooling’ the system to get past this problem

But now you can take them both separately so would only have to resit hazard perception which is the same for bike car lorry bus which really make a mockery of it

It would be better to have a simulator instead
