Theory Prep Tools

Hi everyone

I’m currently driving a 3.5 ton truck and have decided to get my cat C for many reasons. I’ve sent off for my provisional entitlement and decided to do a theory moc test online. I was frankly shocked at how much I need to learn.

When I was getting my cat B (car) licence I used a theory test DVD and just did hours of mocs till I was regularly passing with an average of only 1 or 2 wrong out of 50 every time (passed first time too  )

Does such a thing exist for the cat C theory test?

What have you guys and girls found that worked for you?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

They have apps for the smartie phone, too.

Thanks. I’ll go and have a look

Just jesting mate, good luck with the training

Well it has a flat bed instead of a metal box so :stuck_out_tongue: but yeah its not a real truck lol

There’s also no taco! That’s one of the reasons I want to get on the big trucks as I’ve had days where I’ve done over 13 hours of driving with no breaks except to load and unload. That and I know its been run over its weight limit at times.

Whole thing makes me rather uncomfortable :open_mouth:

Thanks moonpigdan… I’ll have a proper look at them when I next get my computer out

That probably won’t change - driver is responsible and is on his own if stopped. The amount of worry depends on the load - I drive a 21tonner but with not a lot of space left behind the curtains yesterday, my load of insulation materials and a few rolls of plastic weighed less than 4ton and she carries 13 ton max.
Does anybody know a 13 ton Max?! Big lad…
I did theory test fairly recently and have a book and a DVD. I’ll dig it out and post the details and if you’d like them, I’ll send them to you.

Right good to know. I heard a chap got fined £800 and his company £1200 for having too short a tacho break. Is it not the same if your truck is overweight?

I’ve found something to try at the moment but if I run into trouble I’ll drop you a pm. Thanks very much for the offer.

Yeah that Max is huge… Too many takeaways me thinks

Ok so I’ve now got myself the 2015 computer dvd rom for HGV theory prep.

Having trouble with the hazard perception but thats in another thred.

I’m passing with about 90% mark on the theory at the moment but would like it to be higher. I’m having problems with things to do with wights, HGV specific things such as truck to trailer cables and other tec, drivers hours, docs etc. Stuff car drivers never need to know. I’ve looked in the highway code section of the program but I cant find anything that tells me these. Is there anywhere you know of that has all the laws in the highway code that only drivers of HGVs need to know, that would never apply to cars, so that I don’t need to search through all the laws I already know to find the few I don’t.

I’d be very greatful for any help.

I found an all that seemed pretty reliable and had all the right questions on it.

Used it once or twice a day for ages, really helps to just keep drumming it into yourself. Sooner or later you start remembering the relevant figures for height, hours, weight etc.

Just revise, and keep doing it right up until the day of your theory test. Keep it fresh!

Yeah that’s how I got myself ready for my Car theory test. Where would I go though if I have questions after I’ve passed that I happened to miss in my prep?

I don’t want to unwittingly find myself on the wrong side of the law and an expensive fine

Thanks for all your help everyone. Just passed my last test and now I’m just waiting for all my plastic to come back for my Cat C now.

I do have a question though. While I’m waiting I was planning on getting my new CV ready and walking into some local companies to see if their looking for drivers.
Have any of you got any advice or tips?
What should I ware? Suit and tie doesn’t seem appropriate for an LGV job interview.
What should I say when I first go through the door and who should I ask for?

Any advice on all of these points would be greatly appreciated

Thanks again guys, and girls

So you just passed your Class C practical? Congratulations pal!

For what I’ve learnt on this forum:

1, Ready for work, i.e. smart casual (not scruffy!)
2, CV in hand
3, Very KEEN Newbie looking for work and experience
4, Flexible and prepared to go the extra mile
5, Able to do an assessment or days work there and then

Thanks. Just done the mod 4. I was self funded and did most of it on my own and ended up doing it 1,3,2 then 4. Not the best way I now know.
Point 5 would be a problem for me right now as the royal mail is yet to deliver my mod 3 pass certificate to the DVLA.
Is it still worth my while testing the water?

To make it clear, you are waiting to get your plastic licence back and for your online licence to be updated. I’m assuming you have your pass certificate that was handed to you upon completing the test. If so, you probably don’t have anything to lose, although as you say, point 5 might be an issue, probably due to insurance issues. If in your position (as I am), I might just email your CV out for the minute and see what bites. You can always follow up in person when you have the licence in your hand. Hopefully it shouldn’t take too long mate (as I hope too…) In all honestly, I can’t say for sure, as I don’t know for certain how a lot of these companies work. It may be that due to H&S and admin, by the time they have processed your “availability to work”, your licence has arrived. I simply don’t know. So with a bit of luck, between us, we have asked a question that someone in the know will come along and answer!

Not a big issue thought, as I’m lead to believe it’s only about a week!

From what I was told its at least 3 weeks, add onto that I had to keep my licence back as I needed it for my mod 2 and 4… Had to send my certificate off as well  they say it takes even longer when u send it off yourself :unamused:
Apparently as we’ve only just passed we have no need to recoop the £1600 we’ve shelled out any time soon

Admin might be frustrating pal, but you only upset yourself by getting stressed about it. Sad you had to send yours off. Mine was taken by the examiner, so that’s probably why i got a different timescale…

Hope you get it soon!

Thx mate, and congrats to u too BTW.
And ur right, nothing much I can do. Just unsettling to watch your bank balance go down like water out of a bath. I dont know why but the government always seem to decide that I ow them something or they mess something else up at the absolute worst time. Told them I was out of work, effectively they said, ow, very sorry to hear that, by the way we’ve also had a look at your income etc again as you contacted us and you ow us £1300 have a nice day.

Needess to say I’m desperate to get my licence back lol

Unbelievable mate !
Good luck anyway

Thanks… got a bit of good news just now… just been told by an agency that now everythings going digital as long as they can check your cat c entitlement online some companies will employ you before your photo card comes back… and your cpc pass paper is enuf too… might be working again sooner than I thought. :sunglasses:
