The Wreck of the Edumond Fritzgerald

IMHO I think this is a fantatsic song with the perils that lay in any heavy industry, the sea being the most cruel. God rest all who sailed in her.

Yes I like the song too and it’s a worthy tribute to the 29 crew members who died on-board the Edmund Fitzgerald

Though I personally prefer the Illegal Band version.

Edumond…Fritzgerald - shome mishtake ,shorley?  Happy New Year!

A great song about a tragic event.
I remember it doing the rounds in the folk clubs in the late 70s.
This has set me off on an interweb odessey delving into all things Edmund Fitzgerald and Great Lakes.
Cheers for that, fella

Always liked the song, but never realised it was about a real ship sinking. It suddenly has an even greater meaning. :frowning:

I have Gordon Lightfoot’s version of this song on CD and it sends a cold shiver down my spine each time I hear it. Come to think of it I cannot recall ever hearing it on the radio, maybe they think it’s too morbid. Happy new year everyone. Regards, Haddy, Gt.Yarmouth.

A nor’easter was what dumped all the snow in the north central states earlier this year. They come in fast, and hard. It was a nor’easter that the Edmond Fitzgerald found itself in. There were a number of ships lost over the years. The EF was just put to song by one of Canada’s greatest mistrals. He has a triology of the railway as well.

Irish father with a German mother!

i didnt realize it was about such a recent event
still sung in folk clubs well at least the one my son went to
in York with his uni mates one have them had the lyrics to hand
when i collected the oik from there

at way over 3 mins its not radio freindly
but it does get played sometimes but only on the BEEB

It gets some airtime over here. I suppose that is understandable though…

Superior is not a deep lake, and the storms can whip up waves which leave very little water under the keel. There is much speculation about what happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald, even to this day. I think that, if you google it, you will find she was always viewed as an unlucky ship.

As for Lightfoot, the man is one of the greatest. Still tours now. And I personally think that Sundown is one of the coolest songs ever!

This is a subject that is very close to my heart (ie maritime disasters) due to my location.

Here is one about our “local” event

Google “Penlee disaster” for those not familier with it
