, IN NORWAY you are by law in winter to carry a
set of snowchains

IN Swiss by the GOTTHARD TUNNELin winter about 5-10kms
before is a very large parking place and if you do not have the
required amount of snowchains when posted,

For Austria, you must carry a pair of chains .

Yes, know all that. When I ran for Cheveralls I took over a tractor that had a great big bunch of chains hanging on the hooks on the back of the chassis.
Pointed them out many times to the relevant authorities but was never required to break them out.
Good job really, because one day with a bit of time on my hands I decided to teach myself how to fit snow chains, but, when I took them off they were just - chains.

Salut, David.

Ive seen a few sets of those, just hung on some upturned u bolts welded to the chassis.

I had a different solution to my snowchains! I had snow straps

I got stuck in Czech in my Daf 2800, no chains, no chance of a tow as I hadnt seen a truck for hours.

The Daf was an FTG, twin Steer with the air dump in the cab. it was not quite enough, so I improvised…

When I lowered the suspension on the raise lower valve I noticed how far the truck sank, so I put a couple of ratchet straps around the 2nd axle and then inflated the airbags to full, this gave me enough traction to get out of the snow and keep moving.

Eventually the straps broke, but I was on a main road then.

When I got home, I showed my mate and he welded some chains on his truck for the same reason, when working in forests.

I think we invented the first steering lift axle :stuck_out_tongue:

it’s just started now,i’ll have a mess about today whilst there’s not much on the road

dont forget that VERY VERY gentle fethering of the parking handle will use the secondary brakeing system ie trailer brake WARNING USE THIS METHOD VERY VERY ONLY AS A LAST RESORT AND VERY VERY GENTLE ON THE BRAKE LEVER

Best advice I can give you is: “Park up until the spring”

Steve

I thought February was spring?! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

so who’s ringing in sick?

I’m being sent out tomorrow in a nice 4x4 with locking rear diffs and nice off-road tyres. Snow would be nice, but I’m only going as far as Walsall (Midlands) from Coventry :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

if you can put a bit more weight on the front end over the drive axle and lower the suspension on the unit a bit.

Um, that rules me out then. If I want to do anything over 6mpg and 45mph I need to unlock the front freewheeling hubs, but I’ll probably lock them back up when it gets too thick. Thankfully the heater works, and the doors lock. Can’t remember if I have to be at Walsall at 8am or 9am, so I’ll aim for the first time

However, I have before got to the yard and found I was 12h early    :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
