The uk end of things!

Well after 13 years running over the water have finally called it a day and gone on uk only work, wot a shock ive got :astonished: , am working 4 days on 4 days off doing fridge work for a guy in wakefield now i spend my days sat in rdc waiting rooms for hours on end being entertained by fellow drivers!! ( i never knew so many drivers done the middle east, russia were with the sas at the iranian embassy or on the herald) then when ive had enough of being spoken to and treated like somthing that has been scaped of your shoe i get the pleasure of finding a nice â– â– â– â–  infested lay by to park up for the night because the boss wont pay parking  ( gone are the days of parking up abroad and enjoying a meal and a chat with fellow drivers english or not) :sunglasses:. Guess its my own fault for packing europe in but with a one year old son i thought it would be the right thing to do to be home a bit more often, but have since been told by my wife that she would rather me be home less and happy than home more and miserable as she thinks it takes me 4 days to recover from the 4 days work!
Just wondering if theres anyone else out there in the same boat?

I know what you mean about wanting be be with the family more, but quite often it’s difficult for a wife to cope with her hubby being home more when she’s used to him being away.

Couldn’t agree more about the shabby way in which a driver is treated in the UK.

I guess things will resolve themselves for you, my guess as that the urge to run over the water won’t go away, that was my experience anyway.

i know exactly what you mean i was exactly the same when i packed it up and still miss it today if me and the mrs go â– â– â– â–  up i would try and go back to it without doubt, having said that it does get easier and it is nice to get home all the time.one thing i wouldnt do is start having nites out in the uk i dont know how some of the lads put up with it.

Other way round for me. Started to do european at the start of the year just odd trips and no uk between. To be honest I’d rather not do uk anymore and wish I’d done it sooner

Steve, how do you miss being entertained by a spanish fridge pulling up to next to you in the middle of the night. As for the boss not paying for the parking do you really need to work for him/her.Park the truck on some housing estate and go and book in to some digs,do this a few times give him/her the crime number and see if you get the parking paid.Euro work, pay is crap most of it is done by lt bg cz pl h sc etc even in spain, passed through on saturday la junqura was full of eastern euro trucks parked up for the weekend.Think of it this way at least you get paid for worling on a sunday instead of being parked up next to a fridge. :arrow_right:

Hello Big Boy, well after working for the mighty CFS i went to work for Nobbie out of a french depot, best bit was being home every weekend and still doing france so was a happy medium, but the longer i was there the worse us english got treated and done all the crap work the kermits refused to do all for 16k a year so i left there and have worked for a well known waste company for last 5 years, i finish work by 2pm everyday and i bloody love it mate, wouldnt go back to europe if they paid me a £1000 a week and gave me a top of the range all singing and dancing truck with all the bells and ringers. as for uk work i would rather stack shelfs at tescos for £5.65 an hour mate than do that crap.

Good to hear you got a little one, bet he’s worth staying home for!!!

Did European 20 yrs ago for a few years when it was a good job. Had an F12 360 and it to me, it was the Dogs b’s.
Packed it in as we had our family early (I was 22) went to work for Asda when I was 27 as I realized that my son was now five yrs old and the last time I saw him he was being born :astonished: My wife was expecting our daughter at the time.
I missed Euro’ but I’m glad I did it. You will never get back those years with the kids and you only have them once. What a blessing from God!!
My son is now 21 and hairy, my daughter 16 and … give me that lock. Started back Euro in 2005 but was home every weekend.
Now looking to go a bit further.
I tell you Europe will not go away but your kids grow up fast don’t miss it. Maybe all the jingleys will have gone by the time you’re back.

The guy you’re working for sounds like a bit of a See U Next Tuesday. I’d look for something else if I were you.

I am thinking of doing almost the opposite…I have been doing Europe whilst my kids grew up, but now my Daughter is planning to leave home my wife wants to see me more rather than sit at home on her own, so I might have to get a job where I am home more often. she would soon get fed up with me though,
Better I get her a licence and we double man around the EU

Next best thing get a job with a French or Belgian company TSA or Fiolet and run europe UK. Then be home every weekend.
My missus loves it when I’m away - pub quiz tuesdays out with her sister thursdays and no one to interrupt the the soap operas or watch footy on the other side.

I did that at old uncle Norberts, money was chit (16k a year), they wanted you to change trailers in portsmouth after a days work and be in liverpool at 7 am the next day(all legal)and in the end all we did europe wise was ship to caen get off diesel up swap trailers and get back on same boat.

Because you spent so much time in the uk you ended up with all the chit the french refused to do, like the roof out jobs in kings cross was a favorite all while they were swanning round the south of france, italy and spain.

Although you were paid in sterling from manchester you were based in a french depot , you dont get any extra money for sunday or bank hol running.

I was home every weekend but in my opinion they are not worth working for, infact the only good thing was the abuse you used to get from your fellow trucker in the UK who thought i was french until i wound the window down and had a pop back in the queens, always the same reply ‘sorry mate thought you was french’
