Dave the Renegade:
One of the worst things is getting so called trampers who don’t know their way around the country. Then they start holding tipper drivers up. As tipper drivers are naturals at finding and accessing difficult places, this can be extremely frustrating. As well as ■■■■■■■ one off …
Some of them jump out the cab, and ask directions to there back doors
My main gripes regarding tipper work are arsepipe shovel/grab drivers that hit the centre bar and snap it,despite me telling them that there’s a bar in the middle of the trailer,“helpful” site staff that open the barn doors before I’ve had chance to roll the sheet off,and sites that insist I must wear hi-viz trousers as well as a hi-viz vest/jacket.If my top half is visible due to the hi-viz vest/jacket then surely it goes without saying that my bottom half will be just below it?Why do I need to wear hi-viz trousers to confirm my bottom half is below my top half?
Moose:
started doing a bit on the tippers recently,tarmac/nights mostly, not done bad so far but dispite my best efforts theres one part of the job i cant grasp and thats “the mithering about what eveyone else is doing, or where they’ve been,or even where they going next”
can anyone advise “how long will this take, or will it all fall into place given time”
moose
As your dad will tell you Moose it has been going on for the past 30 years at least! If some of the lads were given the days work sheet and asked to choose their own loads they would STILL not be satisfied, they also knew were you were going before you knew yourself. Just accept it, do your own thing and tell 'em nowt!
Never had any gripes about it,I worked for Tinnelly International for a year and then on with a subbie for Garners at Silloth, enjoyed the job,the money and the craic.

Had a monotonous job today, to concrete plant 10 loads in total. To make it worse the radio’s all Children in need and Ive got DCPC course Monday on hours and driver welfare. At least I dont have to pay for it but Id much rather be back on hauling topsoil from Faringdon to Bourton on the water…or muckaway which I find more interesting than aggregates.

Actually between Upper and Lower Slaughter so I have spotted some wealthy looking fanny going to and from the Manor Hotel The problem is a double and very short weight limit in Lower Swell which means we have to go through a winding residential area when the other way is much easier…coupled to the fact that “Gloucestershire Lorry watch” are a bit enthusiastic apparently

Meh, there wasn’t space anywhere else! The old man who lives in the yard told me to park it there because I couldn’t manage to park it by the washer in the dark, and I told him where the keys were hidden
Having done DCPC today, on the way out of the offices, one of the T/planners handed me a map and details for tomorrow; Just 5TONNES ffs of 10mm to a private house in Up Sydling, Dorset. Then to Cemex Wharf at Southampton docks for a load of 20mm flint back to Ducklington. I can’t leave early as I’ve got to load up first, I’m going to do dead on speed limit all the way down and back, just to see if it can be done legally (and more importantly, if I can get back for 4pm )

Based on a bit of google maps, I’d say its do-able. A total of no more than 280-300miles (not sure where you’re based exactly).
What I can’t understand is how its profitable. 300miles at 9MPG at 140ppl = 176GBP (I knocked off the VAT), add in your wages, NI, Tax etc, wear and tear and standing costs. Wagons got to be earning well in excess of 300quid.
Whats so special about your 10mm that they can’t find supplied in Dorset anyway?

Probably some 10mm Cotswold gravel hammer for some Hooray Henry’s drive.
