The times, they are a changin'

In my local pub this evening and I got offered another good full time job, the second in as many weeks. Now I have to admit (as anyone who reads my posts will know) I am HGV positive but really, all I am is a driver who has a good idea of what I’m doing.

It strikes me that the more aware Owners and Managers are already casting out to find the good hands who can run their kit because before long they are going to have to trust it and their careers to some random with a hi~vis and the right cards…

Either that or Walmer Bridge has become the transport centre of the Universe…? You tell me…

Your were offered a job in a pub, by the boss who was also in the pub  yeah it sounds great.

Just to balance it out, how many professional jobs are banded about in local bars?

At no way am I having a dig. I see a case of old school truckers surviving under the H&S bull muck. Which is good.

Most of the serious business is done in the pub isn’t it?
The rest is just messing, it all starts and finishes in the pub.

I went from scratching a living, applying for 100’s of jobs. To get 3 brilliant offers within 3 days. I notice (If you look) That there are a lot of jobs on offer at the mo’. You just gotta search 'em out. They won’t jump in your lap!

I admit I was a bit popped up last night but my local is full of builders, roofers and transport men on a Friday night after work. There is no way I would of been offered either job based on the daft crap I talk when I’ve had a beer (or sober).

The fact that I’ve been in work at the same reputable firm since '07 and I might be a safe pair of hands is much more relevant.

I not suggesting a massive pub crawl until you get a dream job offer Chester (which could be fun)…

I am saying and I’m stone cold sober now is that the more switched on Owners and Managers are keeping an eye out for potential drivers because in my opinion, good staff are already in short supply and that supply is shrinking not growing.

a lot!!! word of mouth goes a long way. if somewhere is taking on and you know the foreman or a employee who is respected by the company and they are prepared to speak for you, youre halfway there.

I must admitt i can’t remember the last job a got through an advert anywhere, be it in a paper or off the job centre.
have always got one by word of mouth or being asked by someone to work for them when i haven’t been looking. i think more often than not learning about something coming up or being offered down the local goes on alot more than people realise, thats why when you it gets to be advertised you ring up and find the jobs always gone :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I miss not having a proper blokes pub to go to, you know the ones like Alex is talking about, where you go in for a pint and you could come home with absolutely anything. As it be full of many of life’s different characters

I once bought a bike early one evening in a pub, and by last orders I had sold it on to someone else for less than I had bought it. :open_mouth:

I have taken a few bikes home from the pub :astonished:

and that sums it up perfectly! :sunglasses: these bigboys don’t deserve us :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

The kind of planks that run large “logistic operations” nowadays don’t go to the pub!!,their more likely to be seen heading towards a spray tan shop or the gym in their company BMW’s than mixing it with the plebs in the local :unamused:

I agree with the OP about management and owners keeping an eye out on who’s who,I’m only 26 but been with my firm nearly 8 years I’ve recently been given a new motor but my old 10 year old one didn’t look 10 years old and a rival company off ours often tap me up to jump switch and at 26 and in my opinion still a bit off a newbie it shows I’m doing something right, I wouldn’t entertain the thought off leaving my place unless I’m asked to do so but I do think other firms keep an eye out on who they’d like to replace there current drivers, as for a job offer in the pub I’m not sure what would happen if you turned up at there place Monday morning after they’d sobered up lol.
