I have an 18 year old who’s interested in going on the road, and is looking to gain the full C+E ticket for Artics and Wag and Drags, he’s so far passed his car test.
I know there used to be a scheme where 18 year olds with an apprenticeship could jump the gun on the old 21 years age barrier, but can’t fathom out the DVLA regs on ages and vehicle class as they’re as clear as mud.
At what age can he drive which vehicle.
3.5 - 7.5 tonne…
at 18, he can now go for cat C if he has a full car licence, then when he passes that test, he gets his licence back from DVLA, he can the go straight for C+E

Thanks Shuttle and Animal, thats what I thought the rules read but the cynic in me couldn’t believe they’d made it so simple
the rules were changed to let an 18 year old drive once passed their test, BUT, the problem is, a lot of companies will not take them on as the insurance can be quite extortionate
so, the thing is, an 18 year old can get the licence, but not get the job due to the insurance companies, and the fact that there are loads of very experienced drivers out there looking for work too

+1 i agree it aint so easy having entitlement as pointed out by no means is it gonna be easy an 18 year old finding work for insurance

This is really for a road haulier to be able to train and employ his own children.
But they could have done that under the young driver scheme
not exactly Ang
if i owned a warehouse and small vans as well as trucks, then, as long as the child had worked in the warehouse or driven the van for a set period of time, then, yes, i could put him/her through the young driver scheme
whereas now, i can just train them straight in to the trucks
Don’t wish to wee on your parade but someone I know out there kid through the test and his insurance quote went up 5k to have an 18 year old on it. He shooed round and got it for 1200 quid over what he was paying.

I’m sure your right that theres someone out there who would provide insurance, at a price It won’t be the firm I’m with at the mo though as a couple of years ago I enquired about a lad who was 24 years old and 2 months off his 25th birthday…Nein
