Ark Royal on the Tyne
Great photos Rastone, Keep them coming, Regards Larry.
The Tyne pub, formally The Ship for many years on the Ouseburn/Tyne, once a busy watering hole for quayside drivers and dock workers, revived today by the restoring of the area around the old Maynards/Steenbergs yard and warehouses. This pub was once owned by one of my Wife’s ancestors during the 1800’s, his younger Brother was also a champion rower and competitions used to be regularly held on the Tyne with bigger races held on the Thames for the fastest rowers around the country, it seemed to be a popular event in those times. The Bagnall family were Tyne Watermen, the rivers equivalent of road hauliers when most goods went up and down river on Keelboats. Our older pubs around the river will have interesting histories and will have witnessed many changes over the years, its a shame many are closing thesedays. Franky.
