The Ramp Bishopgate

Anybody remember the Ramp lorry park in Bishopgate E London, it was a bombed railway station I think the “ramp” referred to the drive up to the raised up parking area, there was some cracking boozers around there with entertainment  on, and a Greek owned cafe which was always full of drivers, I used it a lot in late 70s early 80s, I remember a few lads who regularly parked there one was a lad from Burnley an o/d with an Iveco with “Pendle st. flyer” on the front, Tony?, and a lad called Eric from same area, we got caught up in a National Front march coming out of the pub one night, are you on here?. I was famous there for one night :unamused: :unamused: , when I stopped to pay, got back in my 4 wheeler Fiat 130 and the ratchet handbrake was jammed on  :unamused: blocked the entrance completely , was stuck there for over an hour waiting for a callout while the queue got bigger and bigger   right around the block, I got a hell of a lot of stick that night in the pub afterwards, but all good natured. I bet it is a developed area now but I had a lot of good nights there.

I used to use it on Swiss, used to dump my motor there & go home on the train.

Hi robroy i remember the ramp lorry park from the early 80s, iwas in my early 20s and driving for a furniture company from bradford called york street furniture if im correct you had to enter it from shoreditch high st which was a one way street with four lanes and you had to take it wide to double back on yourself to line up for the ramp! one of the pubs i can remember with entertainment on was called the greengate on bethnal green rd.I had some good nights down there!! can you remember the name of the pub that the krays made notoriuos was it the butchers arms or something some characters used to get in that one

Brevitt carriers used to park on the ramp, used to get quite a few Barnes from Rawtenstall on there as well. I used it now and again but mainly stopped by the Pilot in Greenwich or at Blakeley’s? on tunnel avenue. We used to sit in the back of one of Brevitts tk box vans playing cards, happy days!

Do you mean the “Blind Beggar” but that was further down past Aldgate on the A13 I think, I think there was one down by the Ramp called The Lamb but I can,t remember the others names.

This well known lorry park was not actually a bomb site, the place caught fire sometime in the 1960’s.
I used it a lot during the late '70’s and '80’s but fell out with the price and started parking down below
in the little one on Sclater Street,
Google for “Bishopsgate Goods Station” for some good info.
The Green Gate pub with the entertainment is now an Asian supermarket
Other pubs such as The Knave, Van Tromp, Jolly Butchers, Dolphin, Ship and Blue Ball, Well and Bucket,
Panther, Blade Bone etc.have all fallen to the times.
The White Horse is still in business andThe Crown is still open but has a different name now.
Google for " The White Horse Shoreditch High Street" - very tempting!

Never had anything nicked there.

I was introduced to the cafe by a mate of mine from Hull! He knowsit or rather knew it as Ginas. Bloody great T-bone steak with all the trimmings and a bucket of tea for a tenner, although that was 10-12 years ago.
Apparently, Gina isn’t in the best of health and they only open on Sundays now for the market. I can remember the lorry park but never parked there.

Had some cracking nights there, always loads of Coventry Glass motors there, they had their own line some nights.
Wasn,t the cafe called the TT?
Watch the girls in the White Horse, more in The Crown then by the time you’d drunk youself as far as The Greengate you were watching the same girls that’d done the early shift in The White Horse
Remember going into The Crown one night mid eighties, about 8 or 9 of us jawing away & when one lad askes what time the girls were on we were asked by the big butch lass behind the bar to take a look around…“It’s not your kind of pub anymore” then we noticed we were surrounded by dykes :unamused:  it had changed to a lesbians joint over the weekend before & been re-named " The Alternative" no idea what it is now though.
Dirty Dicks in the basement towards Lime St was another & of course Jack The Rippers.
Remember “the Cowboys” tea wagon outside the derelict church in Spitalfields or going to the Bagel bar on Brick Lane for fresh baked Bagels for your supper?
Happy days, before everyone started stopping in the cab watching telly
