I think that is because when they got the first cpc they were nearing sixty years old so could not see the value in renewing it,second those that were on furlow ? found they could manage on 8o% of wage and so retired early, I am 72 and did do the cpc last year because I like the job but only pick and chose and work what I like…I dont think many will have bothered to do that…the moral is for the companies and gov ,“to see what you have before you lose it”

If those near retirement age didn’t get a DCPC, would they have obtained a medical to keep their HGV current?
The figure seems to be current licence holders, so I would guess, not retirement age. Why pay for a medical and not a DCPC if interested in employment.
There will be some driving private trucks but will it be that many?
I could be making false assumptions?
The Medical & the DCPC are the easy bits for fit retired drivers returning.
3 months or more to renew via DVLA is the killer. I’ve been thinking of getting off my retired arse and helping out but the DVLA is my sticking point.
I quite fancy doing Milk, farm collections or trunking or Fish from Newlyn to France/Spain
Fish to France and Spain sounds good and maybe a week rest in Spain before you come back
I used to post on this site but due to personal circumstances I had to leave driving 4 years ago to become a unpaid carer. I would be willing to do some shifts driving on class 1 but after speaking to universal credit there is no funding to get my DCPC back into date.
Looks to me there’s no shortage or they would pay for at least DCPC for a unpaid carer has anybody else had this problem cause.
what a crying shame good driver willing and able ,that saying your killing a willing horse comes to mind

The letter I got from Doris and Vere of Norbiton today (a copy for you is probably in the post) says “Many employers are offering training packages so even if your Driver CPC has lapsed you can be supported etc etc”.
They’ll probably want you to pay in blood, mind. You know what they’re like.
Anyway, good luck with it. And remember that you can negotiate pretty hard right now.

I use to tramp for over 10 years got payed very good money. I got my letter today aswell but there is no support for DCPC unless u want to sign up to a contract so if there that disparate for drivers that can help until over the Christmas period then why not help them get the DCPC??
Ur last comment makes u sound like u don’t want people re entering the driving world

Not much shellfish being trucked to Europe, after the clown chucked the UK fishing industry under the bus.

Milk is exempt from DCPC. Is that right?

Still quite a few going from Newlyn, Hake has always been a steady trade to Spain & Portugal, don’t understand why more Brits don’t buy it It’s a lovely fish to eat & easy to cook.

On the contrary. Go for it if that’s what you want to do. I meant that you’re in a good negotiating position but that they’ll try it on if they can, so read the small print before signing up to anything.
My cpc has just lapsed and I was thinking of renewing but I just can’t justify it as I no longer drive for a living. Id be happy to help if required but I wont pay what they want for cpc to help
I think there was a lot of anger when CPC came into force with quite a few drivers just packing it in.
So does not surprise me.
Surely if they can scrap the B+E category on licences (car & trailer) then they can also scrap the DCPC, even if it is a temporary measure for a year or so. It might even tempt me back to a couple of days here and there.

I enquired about the claims ‘Vera’ made in Parliament about funding for the DCPC & received the response below.
I do not need funding therefore I have not tested the validity of the response I received.

I can’t tell if that’s a joke or not… It’s certainly exempt from ADR even though it’s a catastrophe to the flora and fauna when it spills.

Considering all the measures taken that genuinely do have an impact on safety, but without any relaxation of the DCPC requirement, then there must be someone within parliament with a personal financial stake in the DCPC.
How their dogmatic insistence that the DCPC be continued above all the other relaxed/removed safety policies I have no idea.
The recent letter we all received was absolute stupidity whilst they are aware those considering returning to help them out would first have to spend 35 hours doing the DCPC before being able to turn a wheel.
The letter would have made sense if they had given a 2 year DCPC requirement ‘amnesty’ before sending it
