The next time you're stuck in a road closure

It’s a valid, and fair point made in the link. When I was a bit younger, I used to moan about road closures and diversions due to accidents. Now, I still get frustrated, but certainly spare a thought to those caught up in what could very well be a life changing event.

We’re all guilty of assuming and jumping to conclusions - we do it all the time, often armed with no knowledge of the facts, situation, or indeed what it is we are getting upset/excited about…I do it all the time when I go to the football, despite being terrible at playing!

When I was serving I had to do a casualty notification officers course. You either knock on the door of a deceased or injured serviceman and tell them, or you are there to support the family with the everything that follows on from said incident. It was without a doubt the hardest course I ever did during my 22yr career. Thankfully I never had to carry out a notification. I do not envy the police officers who have to do this on a daily basis one little bit. I came away from the course feeling drained, almost depressed. I would hate to think how the police feel after doing it so often. I don’t think it would ever get any easier.

No problem with fatal rtc investigations, it’s the minor collisions taking hours that wind me up. Closing a lane because a barrier is a bit bent, or when you get a broken down car not causing any delays…until plod pitch up and start directing traffic.

I got held up this morning for nearly 2 hours in stop start traffic thanks to a truck with a flat tyre on the hard shoulder.
The hold ups were caused by all the over the top gantry warning signs and hato laying out cones with flashing blue lights creating a major drama for motorists to slow down and rubber neck to.
This is what annoys drivers, being held up for non events NOT serious RTA’s

Obviously in the job we do, like many I have encountered many road closures and have been stationary for sometimes hours. I always think, so what! Some poor bugger in front is either dead or seriously injured! My load is not that important, I don’t carry urgent blood or donor parts.

If the load is stated as urgent they should have ordered it earlier, bad planning and they will have to wait. At least I’m still alive and safe!

I agree in principle - and it’s the non-events that help fuel the jumping to conclusions when you are stuck in traffic. I recall a PC having stick from some posh type in his mercedes once, whilst stuck in a road closure - and as per the story in the link, the officer told him straight why the road had been closed; a fatal plus entrapment. Merc man suddenly back peddled.

It’s just a case of more thinking before shouting.

So you’d rather be stuck for 4,5,6+ hrs behind a closed Road because some one has smashed in to the said truck killing a tyre fitter/mechanic/driver?

You mean [zb] moron !

And to put the record straight, I was’nt laughing at the tragic consequences of this occasion. I’m thinking of an incident some 4 years ago when an apprentice engineer and his heavily pregnant girlfriend took a side on by some nutter teenager in ’ daddy’s BMW.

Never mind.
Pregnant girlfriend and unborn killed. Driver survived.

As for Mr. BMW driver ( teenage driver ) Well Daddy’s a law man…

The trouble is, it’s there every day however nasty or disturbing the consequences.
