The next step / finding my niche

Been driving Class 2 for almost two years now and thinking about the next step.

Started on pallets and hated it. Always getting ■■■■ because nobody told them you won’t be carrying a pallet up to their 10th floor flat etc. Also did some GH on agency and was regularly offered permanent jobs but always crap pay.

On the dustcarts the past year and enjoyed it at first, but since going permanent I no longer have a driver’s mate and am still expected to do the same workload as well as operate the pda etc and load all the stuff on my own - there’s often say 10 bins dotted around the site and I now have to keep moving the wagon and jumping out again, which can be time consuming over a shift.

I do so many tight manoeuvres daily, in rush hour city centre traffic, that I’m wondering whether I could move into a new area and find it comparatively ‘easy’. Delivering to yards in the past was defo much easier than the dozens of tight reverses I do daily, in the dark down alleyways between shops etc.

I just don’t know what’s out there. Get my CSCS card? Look at chilled food delivery (GIST etc, not Brakes)? Mixers, tippers, Class 2 tankers, get my ADR?

I’m a bit overwhelmed, but I’ll consider anything that pays at least £30k and I’ve seen a fair few around (I actually cancelled an assessment for £31k, 45 hrs-per-week job at Gist to go permanent at my current job, and I had only a year’s experience at the time).

Keen to hear any suggestions. I’m perhaps more interested in site work or vehicles with a secondary purpose rather than just delivering, but I’m open minded and a grafter and prepared to learn the skills I need.

Need to know where you are and whether you prefer day work tramping or what.

I’m based in the West Midlands, close to Brum. Defo not up for tramping as I’m into my powerlifting and start to go insane if I can’t hit the gym 3x a week - although those days get shuffled around my work. My gym’s 24hr, so I’m open to odd shift patterns etc and I’m open minded and not afraid to get my hands dirty.

I was thinking about it today, and I think that what frustrates me about my job is the constant rushing. I know it’s not a job for fannying around, but lately I’m getting annoyed if I miss a turning or have to ask a car to move because I’m thinking ‘that’s another collection I’m going to miss’.

I usually have about 60-70 jobs to do in 10 hours, but I probably don’t get to my first until almost an hour into my shift as I have to find a free truck, get my work moved over on the system, and then register 15 mins other work before leaving yard. I then obviously lose 45 mins for my break, and I also have to tip off and get back to the yard, where I then have to register another 15 mins other work before leaving.

So, the goal is to be able to do 60-70 jobs in 8 hours around places like Wolvs city centre, Walsall town centre, etc, whilst working through the rush hour too (traffic’s normally quite bad until after 7pm). I also can’t stop out past midnight as I’m then into a night shift and over my 10 legal hours - not allowed to opt out of WTD and company very strict.

I’m finding it pretty tough to be fair. I’m getting though the work but only by coming in an hour early and I’m always working right up to the line, trying to squeeze in those last few jobs.

Doubt ypur find a job paying around 30k .
Maybe try hiab jewsons or Travis Perkins.
I’m sure jewsons will put you through your hiab.

PM me mate, I can put u in touch with an agency, my mate manages one of their offices and got me permanent in the place I am at now after 3 months. 4 on 4 off class 2 multidrop between 2-5 drops a day, usually 4, about 12 hours a day, nearly 33k salary and 20 days holiday a year (book a block of 4 though and u obviously get 12 off) early starts (between 1am - 4am) but a great job for me so far and I have been there a year.
I think we are taking on through agency at the minute and u have all the relevant experience [emoji1303]
