Agreed, no set rules, different ways for different locations.
It’s the clowns who sit for miles flatly refusing to use lane 1 for whatever reason (sat in their hi viz as Juddian said  ) that need a [zb] good kicking.

But there are rules, but it’s ok for some to make up their own yet criticise others for doing exactly the same thing.

You NEVER saw a truck lane hogging once over either, it was always drummed into you keep left at all times.

I clearly remember those days. It was a joy to drive a wagon then without feeling totally embarrassed about your incompetent colleages.

Right up your strasse is this Jakey eh?

You knew exactly what I meant,.I was being more flippant than literal.
But pray do tell us the rules anyway.

I’m sat in lane 1 as I should be,.and some 2hat is hogging lane 2, feeling safe in his own misguided knowledge that he’s being safe and vigilan…t for ■■■■ miles :unamused: , in case of a stranded vehicle,
Winseer driving his famous instrument of death for instance  .

Do go into lane 3 (of 4) and overtake him.
Or.
Carry on regardless in lane 1.

Just to add I’m a bit dubious about overtaking these clowns in trucks at running speed, for obvious reasons but no problem when they are stopped, but just answer my question anyhow.
(So you can teach me how to be a better driver btw.  )

Yes of course I knew, just a wee wind up really but you have to admit an awful lot of drivers make up their own rules to suit themselves but love to criticise others.
Oh yeah seems to be the same for covid rules too.

TBH I rarely came across these situations in a truck although seen plenty cars lane hogging over the years. Shows how quickly standards slip eh but in answer to your question surely you do the correct thing.
DONT undertake EVER. Overtake using lane 3 (presumably legal) but never use the outside lane to overtake. I am almost 100% sure you know what is correct.

Undertaking ain’t ideal I know, on the other hand if traffic is moving in queues is it technically undertaking?..from a legal perspective.?
It’s a ■■■■ long time since I read the highway code, but I’m sure it says that in that case ‘overtaking on left (rather than undertaking) is acceptable’

Again in the old days (yawn yawn  ) if you undertook a car after getting.severely ■■■■■■ off following him for miles hogging lane 2, 9 times out of 10 he would take the hint and move back after you undertook him, where as nowadays they just sit there continuously oblivious afterwards…
Maybe because undertaking is more common nowadays, and who knows deemed acceptable, whether legal or not.

Another question for you Jakey

You are approaching this knob in a car travelling slowly in lane 2, you pull into lane 2, he just ignores you (legally flashing your lights to ‘tell him you’re there’ as the highway code says I believe) he’s trundling along to the point there is a queue of traffic behind you.

We all know tailgating is a no no…although sometimes I do understand the frustration.
So…do you pull back in lane 1 maybe sitting behind him for 20 miles, or do you undertake him.
(Real world answer please Jake, not a textbook theory answer.)
Personally I’ll admit it, I’d end up undertaking him…shock horror probe. :open_mouth:
As unlike yourself I ain’t perfect.

That’s what they say however I understand the frustrations of drivers caught up with inbeciles hogging lanes but personally I would not normally undertake. There may be situations where if done with caution it may be safe(ish) but during normal times(busy) I doubt it. I am just glad I don’t have to deal with these situations day in day out now. More police around could deter these morons although as you say some don’t even know they are doing wrong and screwing others up.

As perfect as I am, I am presuming we are talking about two lanes only here. In that situation if it was very quiet I may undertake him but more than likely I think most move over when flashed. If he did not pull in when I flashed I would probably pull back into lane one and continue behind him and let some other intimidator bully flash him out of the way then I would get past him quickly
gesticulating as I go.
