The Men Who Sleep In Trucks

Came across this on iPlayer thingy a few weeks ago. About 20 mins of depressing pish.

Anybody else here see it? What a way to put newbies off the job!

Whoops!

It’s been discussed on here a couple of times before but there’s nothing wrong with a repeat. It is a bit depressing I suppose but then spending an evening in a truckstop or layby is depressing.

I think it’s what you make it. I think one of them was depressed cos he had a wonky lightboard in the back of the cab

It’s exactly what you make of it. I’ve enough books to read/films to watch/games to play to keep me entertained for more than a few nights plus I can do all of this in peace!

Yes that’s right. I like a night out now and again so I can get some peace!

Trying to stifle a giggle, cos the Mrs is sitting next to me!

There’s a difference between the odd night out here and there, or even 1 or 2 a week, which a lot of people would actually quite like myself included. Compared to 4 or 5 nights out every single week with the 5th night unknown until the 4th has been done. This is what most companies seem to insist on. All or nothing. And I think this is what the new generation of drivers don’t want.

Each to their own, but surely there is enough varied work in most locations that would negate the need for most tramping jobs.

Or is it just a throwback to the ‘Golden Days’ when it was an adventure just to go to Scotland from the Big Smoke.

Obviously this is coming from a day driver with the odd night odd on a sporadic basis. (I paid enough for my house that I like to be in it every day  )

It may come as a surprise to you mate being a self confessed dayman, but some actually enjoy tramping, so we do it through choice :bulb: ,
It aint some settling for second best scenario as you appear to think.
So don’t go believing all the ‘‘baby wipes and living on pies and pop’’ ■■■■■■■■. :stuck_out_tongue: for most of us (who do it properly) it’s nothing like that, for those who go at it like a bull at a gate it’s an endurance excercise.
It’s how you approach it which determines how good or bad it is.

Doing a 13 (or worse a 15) hour shift, and rushing home every bloody night to start the whole thing again tomorrow fills me with dread.
So as you say…Each to their own. :bulb:

No need to be so defensive, I wasn’t making out that it was ‘second best’ as you put it.

I was commenting in relation to the post that said about the 4 or 5 nights out that most companies seem to want.

If you tramp and like it fantastic, if you tramp and don’t like it the do you not have the chance to change jobs?

I don’t mind the odd night out now and then myself, but only for the dogging sites :sunglasses:

Was not meaning to come across as being arsey and defensive mate.
Just that I get a bit ■■■■■■ off with some daymen who do no more than a hundred mile radius (not meaning you personally) who think they know everything about tramping, but in reality know ■■■■ all about it …and come out with all the crap that they do.
I’ve tramped all over UK and Euro and have had some bloody good times (as well as my share of crap times btw) as I try and maintain an element of social life out of it on a few of my nights out, rather than sit moping in the cab all evening/night in a state of suicidal depression as that vid depicts. :unamused:
It bears no resemblance to the tramping that I have experienced anyway.

if you don’t want to “tramp” don’t work to these companies, if you want to “tramp” do so . Its not that hard so why do so many need to have the whole world according to what they want and need ?
I “tramp” and I like the way it works for me . The thought of turning up every morning with my lidl bag not knowing where I’m going , when I’ll be finished , what lorry I’m getting would kill me but you won’t hear me saying everyone should be a tramper just because thats the way I like to do it .

In my present job I go away for two weeks at a time then home for two but in the past have done a month and month about and even when running further field it has been up to five or six months, but then … I am now on my third wife …

Maybe it’s just another attempt by the BBC meterosexuals, to make white men in manual jobs (what used to be known traditionally as working class) look like sad lonely people who really hate their lives and can’t cope?

Or it just might just have been an excuse for some pervert to spend time alone with men in their underpants? :open_mouth:

What it definitely wasn’t, was a serious documentary examining the issues of those working away from home and the pressures it puts on relationships. :unamused:

I would generally agree that this program paints a dire picture of tramping generally.

But from a personal point of view I love it.
Out four nights a week on average, gives me my own space and keeps my marriage fresh :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:
Sure there are hard days but being under my wife’s feet every night would be harder… :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Ive just put this on and I’m shocked the way the filmaker has portrayed the job to be. His interview technique is awful, “dont you get lonely” “why do u do it?” “Do u regret not seeing your deceased wife as much?”. ■■■■ off! Its a job, someone has to do it and us guys that enjoy it and are prepared to do it. We deserve more credit for doing this job and shouldnt be made to feel guity like this filmaker is trying to do.

I’m trying a spell on days.
Yesterday was my first day.
Can’t see it lasting.
