One thing the film highlights is the ALL the drivers interviewed failed to wash before getting on the bunk. The Dirty ‘Trampers’!
Did it for a couple of weeks in the mid 80’s, decided it was not for me for a whole host of reasons, not the least being I like a toilet a quick stagger away, from then till I retired in 2014 apart from one or two unavoidable nights out, I never took a job which involved doing them as a matter of course every week, my friend was just the opposite and loved nights out, if we had American type cabs who knows, or if the boss would pay B&B but British cabs 4/5 nights a week no chance.

Cabs have come a long way since the mid 80s though bud.

They never changed enough for me to live in one for 4/5 days Rob.

Well we’ll have to agree to differ, as I have done nothing else, call me brainwashed
There. Is a video site these days that gives a more accurate and positive view of drivers’ work and lives, but as it’s producer, I’m not permitted to mention it here by name - counts as a not allowed advertisement. Suffice to say that other members can name it, and there is presently a topic about it!

Well that’s 17 minutes I’m never getting back! All he seemed to want was a sob story and nothing else.+1. Obviously filmed to an agenda, and to be honest if I made a habit of stopping overnight in services I too would be depressed and consider heroin as an escape!
Not too sure I’d be overly happy about either being filmed in my bed or the guy parked next to me getting undressed with his curtains open! Unless it was him who played Thor of course, 'cos he’s quite hot!
How many of us would fantasize about a Heroine as an escape though?
…just imagine - a trip to somewhere like Vladivostok, double-“manning” with a co-driver that looks like this…
And who’s done her DCPC in “Office Theatrics”, winning a Theatric award like this…
I’ve never understood this pleasure of sleeping in a lorry - but then I’ve never been a ‘proper trucker’. It’s always just been a job to me.

Bang on Stanley, thats what it always was to me a job, a better job than some, a worse one than others, but just a job.

It’s also just a job to me, only difference is tramping is a lifestyle job, not bigging it up or anything, just saying it as it is.
I rightly or wrongly always took nights out as part and parcel of that job, always looked upon days/nights work as a bit of a rat race and have never fancied it, although dabbled a bit and went back to tramping.
There is tramping and there’s tramping, never been an endurance test type tramper.
Its a way of life for some, me included. I gave up the UK to do more interesting routes and in warmer climes and although the Malaga to Calais slog is a regular i never tire of it, favourite route though is the lap of Spain i do occasionally and obviously at least four nights out a week is the norm. From my own viewpoint i dont see a problem with it and complaining about food/showers/not being too far from home ect blah blah and generally not wanting to do nights out does seem a bit wrapmeincottonwool.com…
My Dad drove lorries for 40 years, had a class 1 for the last 12 (paid for by his employer) and never did a night out. I don’t think he ever worked after 6pm either. The only sleeper cab he’d ever driven was a Scania demonstrator; When the rep pointed out the double bunks, fridge etc he said “I’ve got all those at home.”
He said to me that now he’s retired he loves doing nights away…in hotels.
