The Men Who Sleep In Trucks

I love being by myself. Not because I can’t make friends , I have plenty, but I don’t want to be in the same place all the time. And to be honest, I don’t like other people that much. I prefer to be on my own most of the time. Truck driving is a job that is perfect for me.

I AM HAPPY.

There. I’ve said it. I love this job . That’s why I’ve done it for nearly 30 years.

And no, I’m not sprawling out on my bed for all to appreciate.my fine physic. That is for my girlfriend to enjoy.

Quick question ND, is she a nurse?

No, but she is certified. No, qualified. I think.

I was just going to say that at least if she was a nurse she would be used to gruesome sights

Sorry mate  … I know you can take a joke

You have expressed a lot of my own sentiments there. I get on fine with others for half an hour or so but that’s about my time limit, after that I start to need my own space and thoughts, think I have always been at my best working by myself. Even since sort of retiring my hobbies take me away all day by myself, I just need that space and solitude. I still enjoy being at home with the wife or going out for meals with friends, but I would crack up if I ever had to work in a team.

I got used to me own company sitting around at the royal docks (London) for what seemed a bleeding lifetime.

Like most online videos I just flicked through a bit to the end so didn’t get the full dose of depression but OMG this is bad.

I have to blame the creator, no effort into creating a balanced piece of film at all. Very lazy.

The poor delivery, depressing interview style is only matched by the ■■■■■■■■■■■ made of researching the subject matter.

Some credit has to be given to the truckers allowing themselves to be felched in this fashion, and no doubt some of the points raised will echo with fellow trampers. Especially needing a strong woman to support this lifestyle.
Behind every angry woman is a bloke not quite sure what he has done wrong.

Same here. I’m happiest on my own and love tramping, there’s lots of good aspects to it, my favourite bring waking up to a new scene every day which when on European work especially can be remarkable.

ffs it part of the job not many places you can end a day go for a shower no travel and hit the bunk if you want.

No travel? You drove there! And unless you’re lucky, you’ll have spent more time in the cab than most other workers spend from leaving their homes to returning.

And there are plenty of workplaces that have showers - most people just wait until they get home and do it in comfort. To answer others, there are also other workplaces where people are friends and can go the pub - in fact, I’d say that this job is much less sociable than the norm these days!

The reason we put up with these conditions of work are for hard cash, not because it’s a better lifestyle, and not because it gives us more time with our workmates!

oh here we go poor hard put upon driver - paid to drive and sleep in a truck, If you don’t like it find something else. the conditions are what you make them I know plenty and there are plenty on here who manage to find time for a pint after and plan accordingly.

I have tramped and run over the water never not found a shower either during the day or once parked up. maybe if drivers took the time to speak to each other etc. they could then go for a pint or a meal together. modern trucks are so much better equipped than they used to be and make tramping etc. more comfortable.

Wow that was morbid. The music was like the sound track to a war documentary when they tell you how many died whilst the camera looks at all the graves at a war cemetery.

By the sounds of it I’m going to stay single as marriage will just lead to drugs problems and suicidal thoughts.

Interview with the film maker here: bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/item/ef9a … 22d38aa796

Seems they spent a few days in The Hollies getting fobbed off & eventually landed with this lot as ‘interesting characters’.

I guess positive people make bad telly.

I thought it was quite a good little film tbh.

Of course it’s not representative of all trampers but it was interesting to hear those particular guys’ life stories; why they were doing what they’re doing, what led them there and what was keeping them there.

I’d be equally interested to see a different, perhaps more optimistic take on guys/gals who tramp and who love it and live it to the full, their reasons for that, what they get up to, etc.

It seemed more like a film about men of a certain age and most of their stories - divorce, bereavement etc could probably be told by men of any occupation of that age. They generally seemed fairly stoical about the sleeping in a truck bit.

At least one guy in the bunch was a happy fella - he had zebras, giraffes and birds on his duvet cover. I’m pretty sure he wakes up every morning whistling Zip a de do da.

if you want a positive view on tramping watch video’s by russel Worthing and luke Vernon. just google them.hth

For me, watching someone talking about sleeping in a truck is a bit like watching them play their dashcam back to me. I’ve just done all that, I know what it’s like.

Fair play, I can see it may be interesting to someone who doesn’t do it, but I’d rather wait for the new series of Poldark to be honest.

Then again, I suspect that lorry drivers weren’t part of the target demographic anyway.

The other guy with the beard could hardly get into his bunk for that stupid bloody DAF XF lightboard thing, reckon he must have knocked that together himself.

Yeah, I have to admit robroy - I was thinking the same thing!
