Hi all. I have been lurking in the background for quite sometime. Finally thought I should post to say hello and introduce myself.
Anyway Im Alec from the outskirts of Hull been interested in driving wagons for as long as I can remember when I used to go with my grandfather in the holidays. Bit of history for you I used to be employed as a “drivers mate” for a company called kingstown furniture until I got made redundant some years ago hoping to get my hgv back then which never really materialized so had to settle for security work. After 4-5 years of that I got offered to go on the buses for a large local company where I still am today after 3 years still always wanting to go onto wagons. Well after all this time I have secured enough funds to do my class 2 theory booked for the 4th April I have had my assessment drive where I was told I would only need a days training followed by test on 2nd but I have chosen 2 days training then test on 3rd. Afterwards do my class 1 later in the year.
Now when I passed my bus licence I did my inital cpc I now have completed 28 hours I have been told that I wont have to do mh inital cpc for hgv as if I pass my test before I complete my 35 hours I will automatically gain cpc for hgv I have sort of had that clarified by an email sent to dvla dsa etc but I had some people tell me it doesnt so any further clarification would be great. I will also keep a dairy on here on my journey.

Did you have a LGV C1 on your licence on 10/09/2009 either by passing a LGV C1 test or by passing car test before 1997 ?
No I didnt. On my dqc card I only have bus entitlement. I have an email from dsa that the dates would get aligned and the hgv entitlement added when I pass my test and then complete my 35 hours. My instructor thinkd the same but another training school said I hsve to sit s conversion test
You WILL need to pass initial LGV driver cpc to be able to drive LGVs commercially
You will a D4 medical unless you were canny and ticked for LGV as well as PCV provisionals when you completed the D2 form at the time of applying for PCV - if you cannot remember then look on the paper part of your licence to see if LGV C is listed as a provisional entitlement
Modules required for LGV =
1a theory
1b HPT
2 dcpc theory
3 practical road drive + reversing
4 dcpc practical
Next post will be how it will work for your periodic training hours …
You already have 28 dcpc periodic hours logged so only 7 more needed before the current PCV expiry date
If you have aquired/grandfather rights for PCV (passed before 10/09/2008) thne you have until 9th Sept this year for the last 7 hours to complete the 35
If you passed PCV initial dcpc module 4 for PCV then you have until the expiry date on your DQC (driver cpc card) to get those last 7 hours
When you pass all the LGV modules listed in my last post then you will get a DQC (or a new DQC if you already have one)
That new DQC will have 2 expiry dates on it - one for PCV and one for LGV but … once you complete the last 7 hours of periodic that makes 35 in total you will then get issued with another DQC which will have the same expiry dates for LGV & PCV
That last 7 hours must be completed before the current or ghost DQC expiry date for PCV
The expiry date on the DQC for LGV will then get 5 years added to it on completion of the 35 hours (you have 28 already)
Only periodic training done within 5 years of a DQC expiry date can count so if you do get a DQC as I have stated with an expiry date some time in 2023, yes 2023, then do no more periodic training until 2018
Hi everybody its been a long time since I have been online due to technical issues with my computer (motherboard fried itself). Just to let you know where I am at I passed my Cat c first time with 3 minors. I have also done my CPC Lgv conversion test ( as I already have PCV CPC) I am now booked in to do c+e first week of June followed with my mod 4 a couple of weeks after. Now I have been around a few agency’ asking what sort of jobs are available in my area (Hull) for somebody with 3 years PCV experience wanting to make change over to HGV some of the agencys have told me that my PCV experience doesn’t count for anything which I thought was a bit harsh but how do I really stand on that front?
Ah. I find that a bit harsh tho as there arent many differnces between the 2 other then the load obviously. But im gonna wait until ive got my c + e before I look into changeing my job.
Hi guys just a quick message started my c +e today. again with Graham at golgv. Went really well not any major issues. got another days training on saturday then test on monday.
Can I also just recommend golgv in brandesburton near Hull, I did my class 2 and now my class 1 and graham is absolutely spot on he has some nice trucks aswell realky tidy and easy to drive.
Hi guys. Just to give you all an update I passed my class 1 today with no faults which I am really happy about. To top it all of I may have got myself a class one job aswell for a small family run business will find out shortly.
Hi guys just another quick update to let you know where I am. I did my mod 4 on Monday and passed with 100% Had an interview/assessment drive with a large company on Tuesday. Interview went very well I thought and so did the assessment. Went out in an old 02 plate DAF 85 CF which the company use as a Shunter on the docks. It was loaded with 4 heavy paper reels. So struggled to begin with but once I got used to the truck and load all went well. Got the phone call offering me a job on days to begin with, with a view going on tramping after 6 months. So very happy, I have handed in my notice with my current job as a Bus Driver and starting my new job on Monday the 8th of July.
