The life of an upside down residing fridge driver

Happy New Year Blighty Dwellers…!! It’s already 2012 down here in Christchurch, NZ. I had promised to get some more photos online of random NZ trucks etc. but it’s been a rather hectic week due to starting a new job, finding accomodation and locating an economical personal transportation device (a.k.a. Hyundai Getz  ). Anyway, I didn’t really get any photos of interesting trucks out on the road as I’ve just been driving a rigid around town so I thought I’d give you all an insight into the new job instead if that’s ok? On Wednesday I’ll start on artics or B-trains and I’ll be riding as a passenger for at least the first couple of days untill I’m used to how the job works. That should give me plenty of opportunities to get some scenery/truck photos.
Here’s part 1…

Shunt looks better than half our fleet lol

Wish I could move away and drive in nz or oz

Also what’s the cage thing for on the bottom of the screen?

Is it a part time riot van ?

The grille is just a down under thing…Mainly to stop stone chips and bugs from getting at the screen. The Kenworths on the fleet have to have them removed every 6 months for the M.O.T. equivalent (visibility) but apparently it’s not a problem to use them on a day to day basis which is a bit strange but there you go, who am I to argue??
Here’s part 2.

duck if you see any of stl linehaul and get any pics stick them up please.

Yep, will do. Shouldn’t be too hard… Their main base is less than 2 miles away. I’ve seen “Black Stallion” but I won’t be happy untill I’ve seen his daddy out on the road. Non-kiwis can just google “Black Stallion’s Daddy”… Probably easier than trying to explain…

brenics are another tidy looking fleet from down that way. safe trucking in the new year and hopefully less bother from quakes down chch way.

interesting stuff this , its good to see how other countrys do it .

what weight do they run those 8 axle jobbies at ?

good stuff mate keep it up…

Believe it or not they only run at 44 tons. Some firms like the bulk transport co. I started out with do have yellow “H” placards fitted to them which means they can run heavier on certain approved routes.

its funny how two sets of experts have come up with two ways of running at the same weight , 6 axles for us and 8 axles for them yet we both run the same max weight .

There are lots of 6x4 units pulling tri-axles on super singles so I don’t think you actually “need” all of those axles. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of a tax/licensing dodge. Remember, NZ likes to be seen as a “Green” country… Same weight spread over more axles equals less road abuse in the eyes of Joe public and I’m guessing that all in all it must pay long term to spec an 8-axle rig from new. Whether that’s really the case or not I don’t know but I will find out for sure. I’ve actually got a copy of the road code for commercial drivers and had planned to work my way through it during my 3 day break. However, it’s a red hot scorchin’ day down here and there are too many girls walking around in skimpy outfits to risk retinal strain on something as mundane as axle weights. :open_mouth:

Sounds like a subject for Jerry Springer.

We pay a tax, per kg per kilometer. The more axels the cheaper, until the reforme it late this year. Also the 8 axels allows you to keep within the legal axel weights.
“H” is for high productivity vehicle. Allowing for longer vehicle length also, up to 25 meters including overhang. That mean a truck can carry a 20ft container and pull a semi with a 40 footer.
you can run at 44 tonnes on 6 axels with a permit the extra 2 do not allow more weight.
the idea is more volume / cm3.
i do a lot of heavy containers for a very large company (Halls) who run 8 axels as they can not carry the weight due to the extra tare weight of the truck and trailer.
