The law and you

not having a dig or a go at anyone in particular but I wonder why people ask for definative legal advice on here, when they can Google the facts quicker than posting and waiting for responses…which usually give conflicting advice, sometime completely wrong.

because a lot of the time, if you don’t know the very specific terms you need to use, then google just throws up rubbish from all over the world. and the gov.uk website is a maze of crap and convoluted bollox. I tried finding out what motorbike I could ride on my car license, what size/auto or not etc, and Ihad to cross reference several pages just so I could factor in when I passed my test and what date new laws came into effect, and then a different page to make sure L plates didnt have to be displayed.

Granted a lot of people on here tend to post a load of balls and have a go at whos asking the question, instead of just coming out with “I dont know myself but this is what i do so you should too unless you’re a moron” now and again someone might actually know after having looked previously or at least come up with the right terms you need to use and get pointed in the right direction.

not everyone is like the regulars on here who as soon as they got their big boys license became instant experts on everything, not me though, I know it all, because that’s what my mum told me.

i would never use Google, as there is no one in the world who knows about all things in life other than an hairy arsed trucker, the automatic kings of the road know all there is to know so the question should be why go anywhere else other than seek the wisdom of the know alls around here ?

I contacted DVSA regarding maximum size of caravan that could be towed by a car. They couldn’t answer the question.

35 seconds for this

How large a caravan can I tow legally in the UK?
A touring caravan with:

  • a maximum laden weight not exceeding 3,500 kg
  • an overall width not exceeding 2.3 metres
  • an overall body length not exceeding 7 metres (excluding drawbar and coupling)
…is the maximum size that can be legally towed by a motor vehicle whose maximum gross vehicle weight is less than 3,500 kg (so most 4x4s and even Transit type vans are not allowed to tow caravans that exceed the above dimensions). There are very few such large caravans in the UK, but it is as well to be aware of this

I have, at this time no idea if the above is accurate, but it was quicker than posting here and getting several different answers

It’s a pity our Government Department aren’t as efficient. You can guarantee if you were not complying with the rules they would know the answers then.

After I figured out what bike I cold legally ride just under my car license, I got pulled over by the police (mainly because it was 2am). after asking what i was doing (going to work) they asked if i had a license and insurance and if I shouldn’t I have L plates on, told them the relevant details, they both looked at each other and I quote:

“this bloke probably knows more about it than we do, let’s leave him to it”

I know there is a huge amount of legal mumbo jumbo to know for the regular policeman on the street, but what an answer.

Often the Gov sites can be misinterpreted or have errors in them so posting on an open forum can get a more definitive answer and if there is an error by those giving answers then it can be picked up on by others and amended

Using both by quoting links to Gov sites will often sort out most issues

fair enough Roger, my point was that in lots of cases a simple search gives you the definative clear answer but many still prefer to ask here and get varied “certain” answers, usually contradicting each other but both adamantly “certain”… and then get referred to the page they would have found initially!

If you’ve not passed your bike test, you’re riding on your car licence under provisional terms, then you should be riding with L plates.

You would need a CBT also, if you passed your car test after 01/02/01.

I must admit to being a bit of a googler myself for stuff I would like to know (see tribbing thread).

But you cant beat asking on a forum like this where some expert opinions are available for a more one on one discussion then other folks give their view and if your really lucky 2 posters take umbridge with each other and it kicks off nicely.

Also helps those out who may have a similar question or just want to troll a bit.

Yep. Nothing beats not checking a thread for a few days coz you don’t think it’ll be of any interest only to see its erupted into 4 pages of insults, arguments and bickering. (They used to be 6 pages but I think before posting more now and dont get involved as much! )

Although im with the OP on this one. Look at the thread about using the third lane during roadworks. Tooing and froing about the wording “any vehicle”. They will never agree and we will never know who is actually right. Yet the OP of that thread is looking for advice. At best you can get some points of view and then take from it what you want. Although id love to know if anyone has ever been getting a ticket/been in court and used the defense “Your wrong, the guys on trucknet said it was ok”

That rule applies to mopeds, once you go over 50cc all riders require a CBT.

Ok a serious question

I am thinking of moving home to the UK from Australia!!!

I have a C+E and a PCV on my UK licence
I have a HC (C+E) and a motorbike licence over here, now will they allow me to ride my motorbike I’m bringing mine home to the UK. will they allow it on my Aussie licence or allow me to swap it for a UK motorbike licence or will i have to take a test? I am very confused and DVLA doesn’t help.

I don’t care for the truck licence has I have no intentions of driving them again but always good to have the licence just encase.

at the time I got myself a little 50cc moped, restricted to 30mph just to do the 9 miles to and from work everyday, so didn’t need anything extra as I passed the car test yonks ago. Point was you shouldn’t have to delve through pages and pages of government twoddle just to find 3 relevant sentences.

I used too Google a bit ,mostly football, did it one night whilst Mrs was sat next too me ,it came up with naked women :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ,zb me the Mrs went spare ,and no amount of pleading my innocence managed too convince her I wasn’t looking forthose types of sites ,it’s safer too ask on here .
N.b how ever hard I try I’ve never found that site again
