The kings of the road

Done a bit of shunting in my time. The trick is to actually make sure you get on with your drivers, then if you work it out right they actually do most of the work for you, and always hide a couple of spare trailers from warehouse to make things even easier. Of course if there are any drivers you don’t get on with there are plenty of opportunities (hide the trailer was always a good one) to muck them about with little chance of reprisal.

To be honest I’ve found most shunters to be ok, and helpful.

Although a shunter is quite simple to reverse one cannot help but admire how well these buggers do it.
All about first impressions really its their yard so be prepared to humble down a bit for an easier life.
Thats said theres always one that you cant get on with but no need to get worked up just carry on regardless.

The irony that ive just informed a shunter driver to do one is quite funny, how dare he come up to my truck and try and open the door doesnt he know who I am ■■?..

Really Dave I am intrigued to know why you think a shunter is quite simple to reverse compared to a normal unit?
Unless something has changed since I trained car drivers to shunt trailers the only thing easier was hooking up.
Mind you that was (bloody ell) 25 years ago.

I dunno, shorter wheelbase, better lock, good all round visibility, all things which help initial positioning and easier to correct oversteering before you overcook it and need a shunt.

I had a go once and found it easier think it was a terborg thing, that said maybe just doing the same bays day in and day out help. Or shunters are just better than your average class 1 driver of today or maybe they are old hands who have got the t shirt from a time when drivers where drivers and showers where communual.

I find a lot of drivers will only use the mirrors and not stick the head out the window when reversing on to the bay plus I don’t know whether it’s a pride issue either but not many get out and have a look

Gatza…thats all down to experience…some can and some cant…tractors years ago had no sleepers and windows in the back, that made it a bit easier, but with years of experience i find i dont need to hang out of the door, i use my mirrors, but the real art is lining up in the correct position in the first place.

I agree with ROB because hes an old hand too, i never have problems with shunters cos i do what they ask if needed, its for everyones benefit, and also saves time in not having to go to the office every 5 minutes…just depends on drivers attitudes, and knowing the rules, then obeying them…thats it.

Suppose you may have a point especially with visibility but to be honest I never really found much difference from our normal training units at the time.

Shunters should be good doing it all day long and every day of the week. Something that never appealed to me though.

them ones at tesco used to go mental at me, I hated tipping them d/d tris
At rsu so I used to tell um at gate it was empty then dump it round back of vmu, then zb quick, next day did they give me some ■■■■ :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
Same as diesel img up fridge , couldn’t be assed and they used to go on at me like a load of old women, like I said to them why don’t you do it instead of sitting round all shift yapping , Zb hell
Did they go off on one then :unamused: , banks men are the same , always shouting , I’m not Zb deaf :unamused: :unamused:

I’ve done shunting for the past 12 years I was offered the job and it was too good of an offer to refuse
I’m losing my job next April as our factory is closing down and production is moving to Poland
So I’m in two minds to return to lorry driving
